February 23rd-26th - Metros

Metros weekend proved to be a huge success for the Bengals, especially the Boys team. Blake also competed in the 200 Brett Merl Free Relays. Juniors Jake Kalen, Shawn Glisson, Anthony Fischetti and freshman Grant Konoza gained valuable experience at Metros. February 17th-19th - MCPS County Championships

Overall, Counties was a success for the Blake Bengals. The Boys team continued its impressive season, finishing a surprising 5th in the county. The Girls placed 15th, and Blake was a combined 9th in MCPS, despite competing in Division III. 

The Bengals were once again led by senior captain Spencer Sterling. Spencer placed 1st in 100 Fly and 2nd in 200 Free, an event in which he tied the school record (1:44.42). Spencer also teamed up with sophomore Sam Jaffe, senior Cameron Lancon and junior David Altobelli to place 2nd in the 200 Medley Relay. Sophomore Cory Camp placed 7th in both the 200 IM and 500 Free and Cameron Lancon took 4th in the 100 Fly. Blake also set a school record in the 200 Free Relay (Spencer, Cory, Cameron and David). Spencer's leadoff split of 22.02 also broke his own school record in the 50 Free. Junior dive captain Victor Bennett placed 10th, and David Altobelli (50 and 100 Free) and Sam Jaffe (100 Breast) also scored points individually. The 400 Free Relay (Cory, junior Andrew Latona, Sam and Cameron) also earned points for the Bengals. The Girls received point contributions from sophomore Cassandra Wolsh and junior Rebecca Kalinich in diving. Junior Amanda Freeman scored in the 100 Free, and all three relays placed in the top 16.

Blake also saw season best times from junior Jake Kalen (200 Free), sophomore Dan D'Amico (500 Free), sophomore Deanna Chirigos (500 Free), junior McKayla Adam (100 Fly), and junior Shawn Glisson (100 Back).

February 12th - MCPS Division III Championships

In the first meet of the championship season, the Bengals continued their strong performances. The Boys team cruised to a first place finish in the meet, earning 449 points and outscoring the nearest competitor by 100 points. The first place finish clinched the first division title in the Boys' program's history! The Girls team held seed and finished second to a strong Magruder squad.

Senior captain Spencer Sterling once again paced the Bengals, winning the 50 Free and 100 Fly and being a part of two first place relays. Spencer's 50 Free time also broke the school record, previously set in 2009 by Matt Stevens. Sophomore Cory Camp also won two individual events (200 and 500 Free). Blake's Boys also won all three relays; teaming up with Spencer and Cory were sophomore Andrew Latona, sophomore Sam Jaffe, junior Shawn Glisson, and junior David Altobelli. Junior captain Victor Bennett placed second in diving. Many of the Bengals contributed to the win by posting season best times, including junior Anthony Fischetti (200 Free, 100 Fly), junior Nam Tran (100 Fly, 100 Breast), sophomore Dan D'Amico (500 Free), junior Jake Kalen (200 IM, 500 Free), junior Shawn Glisson (50 Free, 100 Free), junior David Hylton (100 Breast), senior Ryan Kerner (100 Back), and freshman Grant Konoza (100 Free).

The Girls were led by juniors Amanda Freeman and Rachel Jaffe. Amanda placed second in the 200 and 100 Free, and Rachel swam season best times in the 500 Free (3rd Place) and 100 Back (2nd Place). All four swims were Metro qualifying. The Girls' 200 Medley Relay team posted a Metro cut for the first time this season (Rachel Jaffe, freshman Bethany Hamson, junior McKayla Adam, Amanda Freeman). Junior Rebecca Kalinich was Blake's highest scoring diver, placing third in the event. The Bengals had a number of fast swims, but several Blake Girls posted season best times in two individual events; freshman Sarah Bridegum (50 and 100 Free), senior Mari Shilling (100 Fly and 100 Breast), sophomore Deanna Chirigos (200 and 500 Free), freshman Daphne O'Grady (200 Free and 100 Back), and senior captain Shannon Wade (200 IM and 100 Free).

The Divisionals meet capped a successful season in Division III for the Bengals. The Boys finished undefeated in first place, and the Girls held their own by finishing second. Due to finishing first in combined points at Divisionals, Blake will be moving back up to Division II in the 2011-2012 season.

February 5th - vs. Watkins Mill

Blake took on Division IV opponent Watkins Mill and easily came away with victories in the Boys and Girls meets. The Boys team completed its undefeated dual meet season with a 103-57 win, and the Girls team bounced back from its loss to Magruder with a 116.5-46.5 victory. 

The Bengals dominated from start to finish - winning all four relays and sweeping seven events (Boys 200 Free, Boys and Girls Diving, Boys 100 Fly, Boys and Girls 500 Free, and Girls 100 Back). All three Blake Boys 200 Freestylers (sophomores Cory Camp and Sam Jaffe and junior David Altobelli) broke two minutes. Senior captain Spencer Sterling broke the school record in the 200 IM, besting Matt Stevens' record from 2009. Junior Amanda Freeman took first in the 200 Free and 100 Back for the Bengals, and junior David Hylton also contributed with a win in the 100 Breast. Overall, Blake took first place in 20 out of 24 events. Other winners for the Bengals were freshman Bethany Hamson, junior David Altobelli, sophomore Cory Camp, junior McKayla Adam, junior captain Victor Bennett, sophomore Cassandra Wolsh, and junior captain Rachel Jaffe. 

January 29th - vs. Magruder

The final divisional opponent of the season proved to be the toughest one yet for Blake. While the Boys cruised to a 110-61 victory, the Girls suffered their first loss of the season, 96-75. 

The Boys finished first in 10 out of 11 events, and were never seriously challenged by the Colonels. The 200 Medley Relay team of sophomore Andrew Latona, sophomore Sam Jaffe, senior Cameron Lancon and junior David Altobelli swam a season best time to start the meet. Senior captain Spencer Sterling took first place in the 200 Free with a season best time, and also won the 100 Free in 48.77 - less than a tenth off the school record. Sophomore Cory Camp outpaced the competition in the 200 IM and the 500 Free. Sterling and Camp later teamed up with juniors Shawn Glisson and Jake Kalen to win the 400 Free Relay in a season best time for Blake. Other winners for Blake were David Altobelli (50 Free), Cameron Lancon (100 Fly and 100 Back), and Sam Jaffe (100 Breast). 

The Girls had a number of quality swims, but in the end Magruder was too much. Junior captain Rachel Jaffe led the Bengals with victories in the 200 Free and 500 Free. Junior Amanda Freeman took home Blake's only other individual victory, in the 100 Free. Jaffe and Freeman also teamed up with freshman Madi Kalen and junior Melina Latona to win the 400 Free Relay in a season best time for Blake. 

Both teams are still alive in the hunt for a division title. The Boys team, which has never won a division title in the program's history, needs to finish ahead of Magruder at Divisionals. The Girls team, which has not won a division title since 2006, needs to place first at Divisionals.   

January 22nd - vs. Einstein

Blake continued its run through Division III by sweeping Einstein, 116-55 in the Girls and 126-44 in the Boys. Blake took first place in 19 of the 22 events on the day. Seniors Spencer Sterling and Cameron Lancon and junior Amanda Freeman remained undefeated in individual events for the season. Sophomore diver Cassandra Wolsh took first place for the third time this season, and has yet to lose. Blake took first and second place in both medley relays to start the meet, and also swept the 200 IM, 50 Free, 100 Free and 100 Backstroke events. A number of Blake swimmers dropped significant amounts of time during the meet, led by juniors Anthony Fischetti (200 Free, 100 Back), Shawn Glisson (500 Free), Nam Tran (500 Free) and David Altobelli (200 IM), sophomores Deanna Chirigos (100 Fly) and Sam Jaffe (100 Free), freshmen Ashley Sheibaniagdam (100 Fly, 100 Back) and Daphne O'Grady (100 Back) and senior Corinne Konoza (100 Breast). Blake also got a strong effort from sophomore Cory Camp, who won the 50 and 100 Freestyles. Junior diver Matt Mehallick took first place for the first time in his career. Congrats to freshmen Sami Wright and Torie Broer, who did a great job in their first attempt at the 200 Free, and freshman Grant Konoza, who finished the 500 Free for the first time in his career.  

January 15th - vs. Kennedy

Blake remained undefeated by defeated Kennedy. The Boys won 116-55 and the Girls won 122-44. Seniors Spencer Sterling and Cameron Lancon, as well as junior Amanda Freeman, each won two individual events. All three swimmers have yet to lose an individual event this season. Junior Rachel Jaffe achieved a Metro qualifying time in the 500 free for the first time. Junior Irene Lemberos, sophomore Max Young, and freshman Sarah Bridegum each competed in the 200 Free for the first time, and did great. Junior Anthony Fischetti (200 IM), freshman Grant Konoza (100 Fly) and freshman Nicole Lertora (500 Free) each competed in a difficult event for the first time, and also performed well. Sophomore Cassandra Wolsh took first place in the diving, which she has done each time she has competed this season. We also saw significant time drops by Aiman Abdulmouti (50 Free), Anthony Fischetti (100 Fly), Deanna Chirigos (500 Free), Alana Kominski (100 Back) and Sarah Aylor (100 Breast), just to name a few.

January 8th - Division III Relays

Blake edged Magruder to take home the Division III Relay championship. Results can be seen here. Blake touched first in 7 of the 12 relays on the day.

December 18th - vs. Rockville

Blake continued its winning ways with victories over Rockville. The Boys team of sophomore Cory Camp, junior Jake Kalen, sophomore Andrew Latona, and senior captain Spencer Sterling easily won, as did the Girls team of junior Amanda Freeman, freshman Bethany Hamson, freshman Nicole Lertora, and junior captain Rachel Jaffe.

December 11th - vs. Gaithersburg

The Bengals started off the season with wins by the Boys (102-67) and Girls (124-47). Blake took first place in 21 of 22 events, and had numerous team members win multiple events. The following Bengals won three events: senior captain Spencer Sterling (200 Free, 100 Free, 400 Free Relay), junior captain Rachel Jaffe (200 Free, 500 Free, 400 Free Relay), senior Cameron Lancon (200 Medley Relay, 50 Free, 100 Fly), sophomore Sam Jaffe (200 IM, 500 Free, 400 Free Relay), junior Amanda Freeman (200 Medley Relay, 50 Free, 100 Back), and freshman Bethany Hamson (200 Medley Relay, 200 IM, 100 Breast).

Blake also swept the diving events; junior captain Victor Bennett and sophomore Cassandra Wolsh each took first, while junior Matthew Mehallick and junior Rebecca Kalinich placed second.

Other winners for Blake included: sophomore Madi Kalen (100 Free, 400 Free Relay), junior Melina Latona (100 Fly, 400 Free Relay), sophomore Andrew Latona (100 Back), junior Jake Kalen (400 Free Relay), senior captain Shannon Wade (400 Free Relay), and the Girls' 200 Medley Relay team of Freeman, Hamson, junior McKayla Adam, and freshman Nicole Lertora, and the Boys' 200 Medley Relay team of junior David Altobelli, sophomore Nick Breen, Lancon, and junior Anthony Fischetti.

December 4th - Exhibition Meet vs. Springbrook

Blake took on Northeast Consortium rival Springbrook in an exhibition meet to start the 2010-2011 season. Despite missing a number of key swimmers that were competing in a championship club meet, the Bengals performed well against Springbrook. 

The Girls started the meet out with a win in the 200 Medley Relay  - Irene Lemberos (JR), Amanda Breen (SR), McKayla Adam (JR) and Sarah Bridegum (FR). Sophomore Cory Camp followed that up with a win in the 200 free. The Bengals then swept the Girls 200 Free, led by Melina Latona (JR), Laura Smethurst (SO) and senior captain Shannon Wade. Juniors Shawn Glisson and Anthony Fischetti finished one-two in the 50 free. Freshman Nicole Lertora won both of her individual events (50 Free and 100 Back) in her Blake debut. Senior Cameron Lancon took first place in both the 100 Fly and 100 Back. Junior McKayla Adam finished first in the 100 Breast in her first meet as a Bengal.

February 24th-27th - Metros

Blake competed in the prestigious Washington Metropolitan Area Swimming and Diving Championships, and received many outstanding performances from members of the team. Overall, the Boys finished 13th and the Girls placed 30th. The Boys' finish was the highest in Blake's twelve year existence!

Sophomore Victor Bennett started the competition on Wednesday, placing 27th in diving. Despite being disappointed by not making it past the first cut, Victor had an outstanding season, which included setting Blake's diving records. Blake had three individuals and four relay teams qualify for the Saturday night finals at Metros. The Boys Medley Relay team shaved a little time off its time from prelims, again breaking the school record and placing 13th overall. Spencer Sterling had probably the best night of any Bengal, placing 5th in the 100 Fly with a career best time and later lowering his school record in the 100 Back by finishing 6th. Cameron Lancon had the highest place of the night for Blake, touching 4th in the 100 Fly, and later finished 12th in the 100 Back with a career best time. Cory Camp improved on his seed and time from prelims by placing 13th in the 500 Free, breaking the school record in just his first season with the team! The Girls 200 Free Relay and 400 Free Relay teams of Nikki Cali, Rachel Jaffe, Adrienne Bush and Amanda Freeman placed 20th overall for the only points by the Girls team this year at Metros. February 18th-20th - MCPS County Championships

Blake competed against the best swimmers and divers in Montgomery County, and placed 11th in combined (Boys and Girls) scoring. The Boys team had the highest finish in school history, placing 9th overall. The Girls team fared well, placing 13th overall.

The Boys were led by Spencer Sterling (JR), who placed third in the 100 Fly, just three tenths off of his own school record in the event. Mary earned a season best time in the 100 Back (14th) and competed in the 500 Free for the first time since breaking her wrist mid-season. Blake's only other individual scorer was Amanda Freeman (SO), who placed 16th in the 100 Free. Blake's divers, Rebecca Kalinich (SO) and Paula Edoja (SO) made the Bengals proud by competing in Counties in their first year on the team. Megan Bush (SR) recorded a season best time in the 200 IM, as did Blake's 50 Freestylers, Shannon Wade (JR) and Becky Doane (SR). Melina Latona (SO) also earned a season best time, in the 100 Fly. All three of Blake's relay teams placed in the top 16, earning points. 

February 13th - MCPS Division II Championships

The Bengals went up against Blair, Northwest, Poolesville, Quince Orchard and Sherwood in the Divisional Championships. The Blake Boys finished 5th, while the Blake Girls placed 6th. Despite the long layoff from practices due to the weather, there were several impressive performances from the Blake athletes.

Leading the Bengal boys was Spencer Sterling (JR), who placed first in both the 50 Free and the 100 Back. Cameron Lancon (JR) also was a solid performer, finishing second in the 200 Free and 100 Fly, with season best times in both events. Cory Camp (FR) placed fourth in the 500 Free and sixth in the 200 IM. Andrew Latona (FR) earned a Metros qualifying time in the 100 Back for the first time, placing sixth in the event. Andrew also got a season best time in the 200 IM. Spencer, Cameron, Cory and Andrew all earned Metros cuts in two events, as did Sam Jaffe (FR) in the 200 IM and 100 Breast. Diver Victor Bennett (SO) picked up a third place finish in the diving event and Dan D'Amico (FR) earned two season best times (100 Fly and 500 Free). David Hylton (SO) also went a best time, in the 100 Breast.

The Bengal girls were led by Adrienne Bush (SR), who finished eighth in the 200 IM and fourth in the 500 Free with season best times in both events. Both of Adrienne's swims were Metro qualifying times. Nikki Cali (SR) placed fifth in the 200 Free and seventh in the 100 Free, with Metro cuts in both swims. Nikki's 200 Free time was a season best swim. Also earning Metro cuts for Blake were Amanda Freeman (SO) in the 50 Free and 500 Free and Mary Gillis in the 100 Back, with a season best time. The Blake divers also did a nice job, with Monika Looney (SO) placing seventh and Becca Kalinich (SO) and Anna Haley (FR) placing in the competition. The meet against Magruder was canceled due to the Blizzard of 2010 (Round 1)!

January 30th - vs. Northwest

In the final Division II dual meet of the season, the Bengals finally pulled out a victory on the boys side. Blake boys won 87-84, while the Jaguars won the girls meet 102-69.

In the Boys meet, Northwest won the 200 Medley Relay, but Blake earned valuable points by placing 2nd and 3rd. Spencer Sterling (JR) then captured first in the 200 Free with a Blake season best time, qualifying for Metros. Blake's freshman trio of Cory Camp, Sam Jaffe and Andrew Latona then swept the 200 IM, all three qualifying for Metros. Northwest stormed back with a strong 50 free showing, with Blake's Jeff Brumfield (SR) barely breaking up the sweep. Blake's Victor Bennett (SO) then won the diving for the fourth straight meet and Cameron Lancon (JR) took first with a Metros qualifying time in the 100 Fly. Despite not placing first in the 100 Free, Blake took 2nd, 3rd and 4th to outscore the Jaguars in the event, led by sophomore David Altobelli's Metro qualifying time. Freshman Cory Camp then won his second event of the day, qualifying for Metros in the 500 Free in a come from behind victory. Blake's star juniors Spencer Sterling and Cameron Lancon finished one-two in the 100 Back, each qualifying for Metros. Freshman Sam Jaffe was barely beaten in the 100 Breast, and Blake finished 2nd and 3rd in the 400 Free Relay to eke out the win in the meet.

In the Girls meet, the Jaguars proved to be a deep and talented team, too much for the Bengals. The Bengals were once again led by senior captain Nikki Cali, who won the 200 IM in a personal best time, and also qualified for Metros in the 100 Breast. Sophomore Rachel Jaffe placed first in the 500 Free, and senior Haley-Drew Carpenter won the diving event. Senior Adrienne Bush earned a Metros qualifying time and placed first in the 200 Free. Fellow seniors Megan Bush and Mary Gillis finished 2nd and 3rd in the 200 Free to complete the sweep. Congrats to freshmen Nicole Sterling (200 Free), Kaitlin Klumpp (500 Free) and Laura Smethurst (500 Free) for competing in tough events for the first time - and doing well!

January 23rd - vs. Quince Orchard

Blake had its closest meet of the season, but was defeated by Quince Orchard in both the boys and girls meets. 

Despite placing first in 8 out of the 11 boys events, the Bengals are still in search of their first dual meet win of the season. Quince Orchard set the tone for the meet with a narrow victory in the 200 Medley relay over Blake's team of Andrew Latona (FR), Sam Jaffe (FR), Spencer Sterling (JR) and Jeff Brumfield (SR). Cameron Lancon (JR) earned a Metros time in winning the 200 Free and freshmen Cory Camp and Andrew Latona also qualified for Metros in the 200 IM, placing second and third in the event. Spencer Sterling (JR) tied with QO's star Kevin Hauri (SR) in the 50 Free, just two tenths off of Matt Stevens' school record. Victor Bennett (SO) continued his strong diving, taking another first place just off his own school record score. The turning point in the meet came when Blake star Cameron Lancon false started in the 100 Fly, costing the Bengals a sure first place finish. David Altobelli (SO) qualified for Metros with a best time in the 100 Free, with Andrew Latona (FR) placing second in the event. Spencer Sterling (JR) barely missed a school record again in the 500 Free, but QO's depth took second, third and fourth to win the event. Cory Camp (FR) and David Altobelli (SO) placed first and second in the 100 Back with Metros cuts, and Sam Jaffe (FR) took first place in the 100 Breast with a best time. Cory Camp (FR), David Altobelli (SO), Jake Kalen (SO) and Cameron Lancon (JR) won the 400 Free Relay, but in the end, Quince Orchard's depth led the Cougars to a 10 point victory.

The Blake girls won only a couple of events in the meet, and QO's star swimmers were too much for the Bengals. Amanda Freeman had a standout meet for Blake, finishing in second place in the 50 and 500 Freestyles, with Metro cuts in both events. Amanda' 500 Free was Blake's top time for the season. Senior Nikki Cali had a strong showing in the 200 and 100 Freestyles, placing second in both events with Metro cuts. Seniors Megan and Adrienne Bush also had good swims, with Adrienne qualifying for Metros in the 500 Free and Megan posting season bests in the 100 Fly and 200 IM. January 16th - vs. Sherwood

The Blake Bengals were defeated soundly by Division II opponent Sherwood. Sophomore diver Victor Bennett broke a two year old school record for scoring in a four dive format! Junior Cameron Lancon (50 Free) and freshman Anna Haley (Diving) were Blake's other winners on the day.

January 15th - County Dive Relays

The Bengal divers placed 13th overall in the County Dive Relay meet, an improvement over last season's 19th place finish. Blake was able to get contributions from virtually every diver on the team. Seniors Valery Salas, Haley-Drew Carpenter and Trevor Skibine, junior Max Shannon, sophomores Paula Edoja, Monika Looney, Rebecca Kalinich, Tai Ramsey and Victor Bennett each contributed to the team's success.

January 9th - Division II Swim Relays

The Blake Bengals placed 6th in the Division II Relay meet. The Boys 200 Fly relay team of Andrew Latona, Spencer Sterling, Cameron Lancon and Cory Camp placed second to lead the Bengals. essay writing service

The meet against Poolesville was canceled due to snow. No word yet on whether the meet will replace the non-division meet against Magruder on February 6th.

December 12th - vs. Blair

Blake was missing the bulk of its team loan modification, and both the boys and girls suffered losses in 2009-2010 season opener against Division II opponent Blair. 

For the Bengals, sophomore Victor Bennett placed first in the diving competition. Junior Cameron Lancon won two events (100 Fly and 100 Back) in his return to the team after spending his sophomore season at DeMatha. December 5th - Exhibition meet vs. Paint Branch

The Blake Swim & Dive team started the season off with a quality showing against Northeast Consortium rival Paint Branch in an exhibition meet. The following Bengal Swimmers achieved Metros qualifying times:

Blake had many swimmers competing in "off" events, as well as many swimmers competing for the first time in high school. Freshman Andrew Latona (200 IM, 100 Fly) and junior John King (50 Free) took first place in their first meet for Blake. Senior Megan Bush placed first in the 100 Breast as well. Overall, Blake took first place in 19 out of the 22 events.
