WOLVERINES WIN D4 !! Congradulations to the Watkins Mill Team in winning the MCPS D4 for 2012!
The Division IV Swim Meet was held at the Olney Swim Center on February 4, and the Diving session led off with strong dives by Seniors Aindi Tsarni (3rd) and Chris Arnoiold (8th), Nick Peterson, and Jackie Gardner (4th). The swimming portion then started off with the exciting 200 Medley Relay events, and the Wolverines took 4th (Jonathan Zuniga, Jonathan Durjan, Josh Villanueva, Michael Parra) and 2nd (Caroline Hanson, Kelly Lewis, Sarah Crews, Madelyn Niffenegger). The Clarksburg Boys relay beat the Northwood boy’s team by less than a half second. The Watkins Mill girls relay (Caroline Hanson, Kelly Lewis, Sarah Crews, and Madelyn Niffenegger) tok 2nd place to the Northwood girl’s team by a similar close margin.
The next several events showcased the talents of several strong swimmers such as Kiehl and Moore, Rory Lewis and Carol Anderson (Einstein), and Nick Lechner (Watkins Mill), but then in the 50-Freestyle event the Watkins Mill boy’s team took 1st, 2nd, and 3rd place to sweep the top 3 spots led by Evan Brophy, Alex VanBronkHorst, and Eric Valdez. Watkins Mill Wolverine Swimmers Lechner and Brophy then took top two spots in the 100 Freestyle, despite a strong effort by Clarksburg swimmer Andrew Quian who was swimming only 7 weeks after recovering from a badly broken elbow, and then the Watkins Mill girls showed their speed in taking 1st (Carolin Hanson), 2nd (Kelly Lewis), and 4th (Kailey Schiefer), with a strong swim by Brynn Blanchard (Seneca Valley) preventing them from getting a hat-trick. The Watkins Mill boys then took the 200 Free relay as well, while the Mill's girls settled for 2nd place in losing to Einstein.
The breast stroke event was won by Clarksburg and Northwood, but Watkins Mill took 4th, 5th, and 6th (Josh Villaneuva Eric Flandrau, and Jonathan Durjan) to score the most points in that event. Once again in the breast stroke, the Watkins Mill girls took 1st (Kelly Lewis), 4th and 5th (Abby young and Julianne Mahoney).
The meet ended with the exciting 4 by 100 Free relays, where Clarksburg (Quian, Le, Gou, and Kiehl) beat Watkins Mill (Brophy, Valdez, VanBronkHorst, Lechner) and Einstein (Zeke Gonzalez, Ethan DeWaal, Joe Ferrin, and Rory Lewis) in the boys event with times of 3.35.12, 3.40.27, and 3.45.5 respectively. In the girls relay Northwood won with a time of 4.14.37, but the 2nd place finish was became a battle between Einstein and Watkins Mill girls, with Mallory Niemczuk, Elyse Frank, Jamie Fleishman, and Carol Anderson swimming a 4.27.53 to beat the Wolverine girls' 4.27.96 (Caroline Hanson, Melissa Flatow, Kailey Schiefer, and Kelly Lewis).
The final scores for the Girls were: Einstein 425, Watkins Mill 405, Northwood 318.5, Seneca Valley 283.5, Clarksburg 272, Paint Branch 168, and Wheaton 29. The Boys teams placed as: Watkins Mill 416, Clarksburg 388, Einstein 383, Northwood 290, Seneca Valley 230, Paint Branch 207, and Wheaton 25. Overall (total) scores were: Watkins Mill 821, Einstein 808, Clarksburg 660, Northwood 608.5, Seneca Valley 513.5, Paint Branch 375, Wheaton 54.
After the meet Coach Bryan Clark commented “The team fed off each other at practices and meets this year. To achieve the goal they set forth at the beginning of the year is special. They can now add another year to the swim & dive banner in the gymnasium and it will never be taken down.”
