Oakton Boys and Girls Swim & Dive Teams Win AAA Northern Region Title 

Oakton, VA  - Oakton High School’s Varsity Boys and Girls Swim and Dive teams won the Virginia AAA Northern Region Championship this week at Oak Marr RECenter. The boys scored 281.5 points to finish first over Woodson (250) and Madison (217). The girls scored a winning 245 points with West Potomac (190) and Langley (181) in second and third. 

This is the first time in Oakton’s history that the girls’ team has won the region title. The boys have won the regional title three times in the past four years. It has been ten years since a school in the Northern Region held the Regional title for both boys and girls at the same time. 

Sophomore, Janet Hu, broke two regional records at the meet – 100yd Freestyle (49.52) and 100yd Backstroke (53.76). Both swims qualified as Automatic All-American (AAA) times. In addition, she brought the Cougar girls 400 freestyle relay from behind to win the race with an All-American Consideration (AAC) qualifying time of 3:30.96.  

Diver, Joe LeBerre, placed 3rd at the Northern Region Boys Dive Finals with 461.40 points. He scored 16 points for Oakton’s overall score, and will move onto the State competition in two weeks. Cougar diver, Andy Berger placed 13th overall. 

Numerous Cougar swimmers placed with State qualifying times: 

In the Boys 200yd Medley Relay, Oakton’s Conor Murphy, Ryan Santoro, Carter Sharer, and Denny Nguyen placed 4th with a State qualifying time. 

In the Girls 200yd Medley Relay, Janet Hu, Melissa Shebat, Gillian Crews, and Ashley Doran finished 3rd with an AAC qualifying time. 

In the Girls 200yd Freestyle, Stephanie Hallock placed 6th. 

In the Boys 200yd Individual Medley, Denny Nguyen placed 7th with a State qualifying time.  

In the Boys 50yd Freestyle, Carter Sharer tied for 3rd with a State qualifying time. 

In the Girls 50yd Freestyle, Laura Branton placed 3rd          with a State qualifying time. 

In the Boys 100yd Butterfly, Philip Hu and Carter Sharer placed 3rd and 4th both with State qualifying times. 

In the Girls 100yd Butterfly, Laura Branton placed 1st with an AAC qualifying time. Gillian Crews placed 6th with a State qualifying time. 

In the Boys 100yd Freestyle, Conor Murphy placed 6th with a State qualifying time. 

In the Girls 100yd Freestyle, Janet Hu placed 1st with an AAA time and a Regional record of 49.52. 

In the Boys 500yd Freestyle, Brian Phillips placed 5th with a State qualifying time. 

In the Boys 200yd Freestyle Relay, Ryan Santoro, Gregory DeRosa, Denny Nguyen, and Philip Hu placed 5th with a State qualifying time. 

In the Girls 200yd Freestyle Relay, Laura Branton, Ashley Doran, Stephanie Hallock, and Gillian Crews placed 1st with an AAC qualifying time. 

In the Boys 100yd Backstroke, Philip Hu placed 2nd with an AAC qualifying time. Conor Murphy and Denny Nguyen placed 7th and 8th both with State qualifying times. 

In the Girls 100yd Backstroke, Janet Hu placed 1st with and an AAA and a Regional record of 53.76. 

In the Boys 100yd Breaststroke, Ryan Santoro placed 11th with a State qualifying time. 

In the Girls 100yd Breaststroke, Melissa Shebat placed 14th with a State qualifying time. 

In the Boys 400yd Freestyle Relay, Carter Sharer, Conor Murphy, Brian Phillips, and Philip Hu placed 1st with a State qualifying time. 

In the Girls 400yd Freestyle Relay, Laura Branton, Stephanie Hallock, Kendall Lawhorn, and Janet Hu placed 1st with an AAC qualifying time.

January 28, 2012 

Oakton Swim & Dive Wins Concorde District 

Chantilly, VA  - Oakton High School’s Varsity Swim and Drive teams took the Concorde District Title at Cub Run Recreation Center on Saturday night. The Oakton Cougars scored a winning 483 points for the girls with Chantilly (371.5) in second and Westfield (334.5) in third place. For the boys Oakton scored 506 points to take the win with Chantilly (412) and Westfield (332.5) coming in second and third. 

"This weekend was a great accomplishment for our entire team,” said, Parker Ramsdell, Oakton’s Head Swim Coach. “Our divers put us in a great position, with all four boys and all four girls scoring points, highlighted by Joe LeBerre's All-American Consideration performance.”  

Diver, Joe LeBerre, placed 2nd for the boys with 473.5 points and an AAC performance, and Andy Berger placed sixth with 276.3 points. Both LeBerre and Berger will move onto the AAA Northern Region Championship Meet at Oak Marr. No girls placed in the top 6th, but two of Oakton’s girls placed in the top 10 – Hana Burkly placed 8th and Grace Wagner placed 10th.  

Coach Ramsdell added, “winning the district meet was one of our goals at the start of the season and I am so proud of all of our swimmers for their dedication. Numerous swims stood out, including Denny Nguyen's late charge in the 200 IM, Madelynne Norton's come back in the 500 free, and Philip Hu's anchor leg of the 200 freestyle relay, along with so many other remarkable races and time drops. Our team spirit was out of this world and helped inspire many of our swimmers to best times. If we continue to swim with this intensity, we will have a great chance next weekend at Regionals." 

Janet Hu, Melissa Shebat, Gillian Crews, and Ashley Doran set the Concorde District record for the 200yd Medley Relay with a time of 1:48.36, an AAC qualifying time. Janet Hu placed 1st in the 200yd Individual Medley also meeting the AAA cut. Laura Branton placed 2nd in 50yd Freestyle with a Region qualifying time. Gillian Crews, who placed 4th, and Stephanie Hallock, who placed 7th, also swam Region qualifying times. Gillian Crews, Julia Capobianco, and Gabriela Galvez placed 2nd-4th in 100yd Butterfly all with Region qualifying times. Laura Branton placed 2nd again in the 100yd Freestyle with a State qualifying time. Kendall Lawhorn placed 4th in 500yd Freestyle with a Region qualifying time. Laura Branton, Ashley Doran, Stephanie Hallock, and Gillian Crews placed 3rd in the 200yd Freestyle Relay with a State qualifying time. Janet Hu set the District record for the 100yd Backstroke with a time of 55.17 and an AAA qualifying time. Melissa Shebat placed 5th in the 100yd Breaststroke with a Region qualifying time. Laura Branton, Stephanie Hallock, Kendall Lawhorn, and Janet Hu placed 1st in the 400yd Freestyle Relay with a State qualifying time.

Carter Sharer placed 3rd in the 50yd Freestyle with a State qualifying time, and Ryan Santoro placed 5th with a Region qualifying time. Philip Hu placed 1st in 100yd Butterfly with an AAC qualifying time. Carter Sharer and Conor Murphy took 1st and 2nd in the 100yd Freestyle both with State qualifying times. Brian Phillips placed 2nd in the 500yd Freestyle with a State qualifying time. Nathan Pawlowictz placed 4th with a Region qualifying time. Swimmers and divers with Region qualifying times/scores will advance to the AAA Northern Region Championship Meet at Oak Marr starting Tuesday, January 31st with girls’ diving, followed by boys’ diving on Wednesday, February 1st. Swim preliminaries will take place for girls on Thursday, February 2nd and for boys on Friday, February 3rd. Swim finals will be held Saturday night at 5:30pm at Oak Marr.

Oakton Swims a Perfect 7-0 Season 

Springfield, VA  - Oakton High School’s Varsity Swim and Drive teams took to the water in the last dual meet of the season against Robinson Friday night at Audrey Moore RECenter. The Oakton Cougars beat Robinson for the third time this season. The boys won 190 - 125, and the girls won 190 – 124, resulting in an undefeated season for the Oakton Cougars with seven wins. 

Denny Nguyen took 1st for the team in 100yd Backstroke and 2nd in 100yd Butterfly. Philip Hu finished 1st in 200yd Individual Medley. Carter Sharer placed 1st in 50yd Freestyle. Conor Murphy finished 1st in 100yd Freestyle. Brian Phillips placed 1st in 500yd Freestyle. Ricky Menendez placed 1st in 100yd Breaststroke. 

Ashley Doran placed 1st in 50yd Freestyle and 100yd Backstroke. Janet Hu finished 1st in 100yd Butterfly. Kendall Lawhorn took 1st in 500yd Freestyle. Laura Branton finished 1st in 100yd Breaststroke. 

“We worked so hard this year as a team, and we all were so close. A lot of credit goes to our new coaches. They were so supportive and wanted us to succeed and brought a lot of spirit to the team,” said Melissa Shebat, a junior on the team. “I really think we are going to do amazing in the post season!”  

Oakton’s dive team continued to be a consistently strong force, as Joe LeBerre placed 2nd, and Andy Berger took 4th for the boys. 

Oakton returns to the pool for the Concorde District Meet next weekend, January 27th and 28th, at Cub Run

Oakton Sweeps Robinson for a 6-0 Season 

Chantilly, VA  - Oakton High School’s Varsity Swim and Drive teams went head to head with Robinson Secondary for the second time this season Friday night at Cub Run Recreation Center. Oakton’s boys and girls both had a strong meet, staying undefeated. The boys won 202 - 113, and the girls won 192 - 123. 

The meet started off with Senior Recognition Night. Dr. Banbury, Oakton High School’s principal, and Pat Full, Oakton’s Athletic Directory, were on deck to pay tribute to the team’s 20 graduating seniors.  

Cheryl Meltz, head dive coach, shared her thoughts on the night, “we got to pay tribute to our 20 wonderful senior swimmers and divers who have done so much for our team over the last 4 years. We will definitely miss their contributions to the team after they graduate. We are excited to have both our boys and girls' teams undefeated going into our last dual meet. We are hoping to finish up the season undefeated in our last dual meet next weekend and then look forward to an amazing championship season.” 

Oakton dive had another week of strong performances off the board, as Joe LeBerre took second for the boys.  

Philip Hu placed 1st in both 200yd Freestyle and 500yd Freestyle. Carter Sharer also took 1st in two events - 200yd Individual Medley and 100yd Butterfly. Conor Murphy finished 1st in 100yd Backstroke and 2nd in 50yd Freestyle. 

Janet Hu finished 1st in 200yd Individual Medley and 100yd Freestyle. Julia Capobianco placed 1st in 100yd Butterfly and 100yd Backstroke.  

Oakton will return to the pool for the last meet of the regular season at 8:30 pm Friday, January 20, against Robinson Secondary at Audrey Moore.

Oakton Out-Touches Chantilly

Oakton, VA  - Oakton High School’s Varsity Swim and Drive teams took to the water against Chantilly High School Friday night at Oak Marr Recreation Center. Oakton’s boys and girls fought to the finish, and held tight to their undefeated record this season. The boys won 160 - 155, and the girls won 177 - 135.

Oakton dive had another week of great performances. Joe LeBerre took 1st for the team.

The meet continued with close swims across the board. The little things like coming in 6th rather than 7th, or 4th rather than 5th gave the Oakton teams the win.

Stephanie Hallock, one of the team’s captains, said, “It was a really close meet - closer than we had anticipated, but we pulled through in the end. If we keep up the hard work, there's a definite possibility of an undefeated season and a shot for the State title.”

Philip Hu placed 1st in both of his individual events – 100yd Butterfly and 100yd Backstroke. Conor Murphy placed 1st in 50yd Freestyle and 2nd in 100yd Freestyle. Ryan Santoro finished 1st in 100yd Breaststroke and 2nd in 50yd Freestyle.

Janet Hu placed 1st in 200yd Freestyle and in 100yd Butterfly. Laura Branton finished first in 50yd Freestyle and in 100yd freestyle.

Oakton will return to the pool at 6:30 pm Friday, January 13, against Robinson Secondary at Cub Run.

Oakton Remains Undefeated After Win Over Centreville 

Oakton, VA  - Oakton High School’s Varsity Swim and Drive teams went up against Centreville Saturday night at Oak Marr Recreation Center. Oakton’s boys and girls both won again staying undefeated this season. The boys won 239 - 76, and the girls won 226 - 86. 

Oakton dive continues to have strong performances week to week. Joe LeBerre and Andy Berger placed 1st and 2nd for the boys, and Lauren Johnson, Grace Wagner, and Hana Burkly took 1st, 2nd, and 3rd for the girls. Oakton’s head dive coach, Cheryl Meltz, described the divers improvements. She said, “Joe LeBerre continues to dominate, Andy Berger is improving, and the girls are doing better and better each week. As a whole, we are continuing to improve, and we’re working to put together our district list.” 

The meet continued with another week of strong swims from both the Oakton boys and girls. Oakton boys placed first in every event. The boys also swept in four events: 200yd Freestyle, 200yd Individual Medley, 500yd Freestyle, and 100yd Breaststroke. The girls swept in three events: 200yd Freestyle, 500yd Freestyle, and 100yd Backstroke. 

Philip Hu placed 1st in both of his individual events - 50yd Freestyle and 100yd Freestyle. Carter Sharer took 1st in 100yd Butterfly and 100yd Breaststroke. Denny Nguyen finished first in 500yd Freestyle and in 100yd Backstroke. 

Janet Hu took 1st in 200yd Individual Medley and 100yd Freestyle. Laura Branton finished 1st in 100yd Butterfly and 500yd Freestyle.  

“Everyone stepped up and performed well tonight,” said a proud and excited Nicole Abdullah, one of Oakton’s swim captains. 

Oakton will return to the pool at 6:00 pm Friday, January 6, against Chantilly High School at Oak Marr.

Oakton Dominates the Pool Against Herndon 

Oakton, VA  - Oakton High School’s Varsity Swim and Drive teams went head to head with Herndon High School on Friday night at Oak Marr Recreation Center. Both Oakton’s boys and girls won for the third week in a row. The score for the boys was 194.5 - 120.5, and the score for girls was 213 – 99. 

The Cougars had another strong week of dives with Lauren Johnson taking a 1st place for the girls and Joe LeBerre placing 1st for the boys. Andy Berger, dive captain, expressed his excitement after the win. He said: “Oakton dive did extremely well tonight. We have a very young team this season and they keep setting the bar higher and higher each meet, which is very impressive. We plan to keep up the hard work throughout the season into districts and beyond. I’m so grateful to be captain this year.” 

The meet continued with strong swims from Oakton. In both the boys and girls 200yd Medley Relay, Oakton placed 1st. Conor Murphy, Ryan Santoro, Philip Hu, and Gregory DeRosa swam for the boys. Janet Hu, Melissa Shebat, Gillian Crews, and Kendall Lawhorn swam for the girls. In the 500yd Freestyle Oakton’s girls finished 1st, 2nd, 3rd, and 4th. 

Janet Hu received 1st place in both of her individual events - 50yd Freestyle and 100yd Backstroke. Dylan Staniszewski placed 1st in 200yd Freestyle and 2nd in 100yd Freestyle. 

Carter Sharer placed 1st in both 200yd Freestyle and 100yd Freestyle. Conor Murphy placed 1st in 50yd Freestyle and 100yd Backstroke. Philip Hu also placed 1st in two events - 500yd Freestyle and 100yd Breaststroke. Denny Nguyen received 1st in 200yd Individual Medley and 2nd in 100yd Freestyle.  

“Oakton really did a nice job across the board,” said Parker Ramsdell, Oakton’s head swim coach. 

Oakton will return to the pool at 8:30 pm Saturday, December 17, against Centerville at Oak Marr.

NEWS RELEASE 

December 9, 2011 

Oakton Swim & Dive Crushes Westfield to Go 2 - 0 

Chantilly, VA  - Oakton High School’s Varsity Swim and Drive teams took to the water against Westfield High School Friday night at Cub Run Recreation Center. The Oakton Cougars crushed the Westfield Bulldogs despite missing numerous swimmers. Boys won 194 - 121, and the girls won 218 - 94. 

Oakton’s divers got the team off to a strong start with another week of solid dives. The positive energy created by Oakton dive pumped up the swimmers to dominate the pool and get the win. 

The Cougars, in total, were missing 12 swimmers due to the Tom Dolan and Winter Classic meets, but the team came together to succeed and win the meet against Westfield. Oakton finished hard in every race and was able to rack up some extra points by out-touching Westfield. Oakton’s Head Swim Coach, Parker Ramsdell, said “the depth of the team really showed tonight, as swim after swim kids stepped up, dropped time, and displayed they were prepared to win.” 

The highlights of the meet came mostly from the freshmen on the team as they stepped up to fill the shoes of missing upperclassmen. In his first time swimming the 100yd Butterfly, Jimmy Bailey received 3rd Place. Matt Skinner also came to break 1:00 in 100yd Backstroke Friday night. 

The girls swam exceptionally well as in the 200yd Individual Medley and 100yd Butterfly they finished 1st, 2nd, 3rd, and 4th. Kendall Lawhorn, a sophomore, finished first in both the 200yd Individual Medley and 100yd Freestyle with great drops in time. 

Next weekend the Cougars take to the water two teams. On Friday at 8:30PM Oakton will go up against Herndon at Oak Marr Recreation Center, and on Saturday at 8:30PM Oakton will go head-to-head with Centerville at Oak Marr.

Oakton Rams Robinson at First Swim Meet of Season 

Springfield, VA  - Oakton High School’s Varsity Swim and Drive teams took to the water against Robinson Friday night at South Run Recreation Club. The Oakton Cougars shut out the Robinson Rams. Boys won 194 - 121, and the girls won 193 - 122. 

The Cougars began their first meet of the season strong with the divers as Joe LeBerre broke Oaktons record for dive points in a single meet by 27 points. Head dive coach Cheryl Meltz said the “record was set by Oakton’s only all-American diver in history. Not only did he break the record, he crushed it. It’s definitely a great start for Joe this season.”  

Both the girls and boys 200yd Medley Relay received first place. With L. Branton, G. Crews, A. Doran, and S. Shebat swimming for the girls, they got a time of 1:53.99. C. Murphy, D. Nguyen, R. Santoro, and C. Sharer swam to get a 1:39.74 for the boys. 

Philip Hu received first place in two events Friday night in both the 200yd Individual Medley with a time of 1:59.49 and the 100yd Backstroke with a time of 54.35. 

New head swim coach, Parker Ramsdell, gave some feedback on the swims of the Cougars, “I feel that we’re off to a positive start this season. Swims across the board this weekend were fantastic top to bottom. While we still have work to do, this is a promising start to the 2012 season.”  

This was the first meet for Oakton’s new head coach, Parker Ramsdell. Ramsdell grew up swimming in the Northern Virginia area as a member of the Oakton Otters (NVSL), York Swim Club, and Madison Warhawks. He also helped lead the Warhawks to two Liberty District championships in 2001 and 2002. Ramsdell graduated from The University of Texas with a Bachelor’s degree in Government and Economics. Currently, in addition to coaching the Oakton Swim Team, he coaches York Swim Club’s top senior group. 

Oakton will return to the pool at 6:30 pm this Friday, December 9, against Westfield at Cub Run.
