Oakton Girls Swim & Dive Wins AAA State Championship Title

Fairfax, VA  - Oakton High School’s Varsity Boys and Girls Swim and Dive teams participated in the Virginia AAA State Championship Friday and Saturday at George Mason University. The girls placed 1st with 275 points over Yorktown (128) and McLean (119). The boys placed third with 192 points behind Robinson (218.5) and James Madison (192.5). This is the second consecutive AAA State Title for the girls’ team.

The girls had a night full of winning relays beginning with the 200yd Medley Relay placing 1st with a time of 1:45.11, a new state record and an AAA qualifying time. Janet Hu, Melissa Shebat, Julia Capobianco, and Gillian Crews made up the 200yd Medley Relay team. Laura Branton, Kendall Lawhorn, Megan Byrnes, and Janet Hu placed 1st in the 400yd Freestyle Relay with a time of 3:28.44, a new state record and an AAA qualifying time. Gillian Crews, Elise Bourdelais, Megan Byrnes, and Laura Branton placed 1st in the 200yd Freestyle Relay with an AAC qualifying time.

Janet Hu dominated the pool with four state records. Hu placed 1st in the 100yd Butterfly with a time of 52.84, a new state record and an AAA qualifying time. She also placed 1st in the 100yd Backstroke with a new state record (53.27) and an AAA qualifying time.

Megan Byrnes placed 1st in the 500yd Freestyle with a time of 4:49.75, a new state record and an AAA qualifying time. She also placed 2nd in the 200yd Freestyle with an AAC qualifying time.

Philip Hu placed 1st in the 100yd Backstroke with a new state record (49.44) and an AAA qualifying time. In the 100yd Butterfly, Hu placed 6th.

Laura Branton placed 1st in the 100yd Freestyle with an AAA qualifying time and 2nd in the 50yd Freestyle with an AAC qualifying time.

Diver, Bennett Fagan, placed 8th overall at the AAA State Boys 1m Diving Final with 347.70 points.

The boys 200yd Medley Relay team of John Shebat, Michael Pettinichi, Philip Hu, and Michael Ambrose placed 3rd with an AAC qualifying time.

John Shebat, Gregory DeRosa, Michael Ambrose and Denny Nguyen placed 5th in the 200yd Freestyle Relay.

John Shebat placed 2nd in the 100yd Backstroke with an AAC qualifying time and 7th in the 50yd Freestyle.

Denny Nguyen placed 6th in the 200yd Individual Medley.

Nathan Pawlowicz placed 7th in the 500yd Freestyle.

Gillian Crews placed 5th in the 100yd Butterfly.

Julia Capobianco placed 7th in the 100yd Butterfly.

Oakton Girls Swim & Dive Wins AAA Northern Region Title 

Oakton, VA  - Oakton High School’s Varsity Boys and Girls Swim and Dive teams participated in the Virginia AAA Northern Region Championship this week at Oak Marr RECenter. The girls placed 1st with 313 points over McLean (194) and Langley (183). The boys placed third with 235 points behind James Madison (310) and Robinson (254). This is the second consecutive AAA Northern Region Title for the girls’ team. 

Junior, Janet Hu, 2012 All-Met Swimmer of The Year, broke two regional records at the meet – 100yd Freestyle (48.90) and 100yd Backstroke (52.81). Both swims qualified as Automatic All-American (AAA) times.  

Freshman, Megan Byrnes, broke the record in the 200yd Freestyle (1.50.34) with an AAC qualifying time and in the 500yd Freestyle (4:50.43) with an AAA qualifying time.  

The girls’ relays were unstoppable. Hu led the 200yd Medley Relay with Melissa Shebat, Julia Capobianco, and Gillian Crews that placed 1st with an AAC qualifying time. Byrnes was a part of the 200yd Freestyle Relay with Gillian Crews, Elise Bourdelais, and Laura Branton that placed 1st with an AAA qualifying time of 1:36.62. Hu anchored the 400yd Freestyle Relay with Laura Branton, Kendall Lawhorn, and Megan Byrnes that broke the regional record with a time of 3:27.73 and an AAA qualifying time. 

Diver, Bennett Fagan, placed 10th overall at the AAA Northern Region Boys 1m Diving Final with 317.05 points. 

Numerous Cougar swimmers placed with State qualifying times: 

In the Boys 200yd Medley Relay, Oakton’s John Shebat, Michael Pettinichi, Philip Hu, and Michael Ambrose placed 3rd with an AAC qualifying time. 

In the Girls 200yd Medley Relay, Janet Hu, Melissa Shebat, Julia Capobianco, and Gillian Crews placed 1st with an AAC qualifying time. 

In the Girls 200yd Freestyle, Megan Byrnes placed 1st with a region record and an AAC qualifying time. 

In the Boys 200yd Individual Medley, Denny Nguyen and Nathan Pawlowicz placed 2nd and 5th respectively with a state qualifying times. 

In the Boys 50yd Freestyle, John Shebat placed 4th with a state qualifying time. 

In the Girls 50yd Freestyle, Laura Branton and Gillian Crews places 4th and 8th with state qualifying times. 

In the Boys 100yd Butterfly, Philip Hu placed 1st with an AAC qualifying time. 

In the Girls 100yd Butterfly, Laura Branton placed 2nd with an AAA qualifying time. Julia Capobianco and Gillian Crews placed 5th and 6th with state qualifying times. 

In the Girls 100yd Freestyle, Janet Hu placed 1st with a region record and an AAA qualifying time. 

In the Boys 500yd Freestyle, Nathan Pawlowicz placed 4th with a state qualifying time. 

In the Girls 500yd Freestyle, Megan Byrnes placed 1st with a region record and an AAA qualifying time. 

In the Boys 200yd Freestyle Relay, John Shebat, Cameron Santoro, Michael Ambrose, and Denny Nguyen placed 4th with a state qualifying time. 

In the Girls 200yd Freestyle Relay, Gillian Crews, Elise Bourdelais, Megan Byrnes, and Laura Branton placed 1st with an AAA qualifying time. 

In the Boys 100yd Backstroke, Philip Hu placed 1st with a region record and an AAA qualifying time. 

In the Girls 100yd Backstroke, Janet Hu placed 1st with a region record and an AAA qualifying time. 

In the Boys 100yd Breaststroke, Michael Pettinichi placed 14th with a state qualifying time. 

In the Boys 400yd Freestyle Relay, Denny Nguyen, Michael Ambrose, Nathan Pawlowicz, and Philip Hu placed 5th with a state qualifying time. 

In the Girls 400yd Freestyle Relay, Laura Branton, Kendall Lawhorn, Megan Byrnes, and Janet Hu placed 1st with a region record and an AAA qualifying time.

Oakton Swim & Dive Wins Back-to-Back District Titles 

Chantilly, VA  - Oakton High School’s Varsity Swim and Drive teams won both the boys’ and girls’ Concorde District Swim & Dive Championship Saturday night at Cub Run RECenter. The girls won with 532 points over Robinson in second place with 323 points. The boys won with 464 points over Robinson (460) in second place. 

 

Oakton’s divers set the stage for an incredible night. Bennett Fagan placed 3rd for the boys. Julia Powell and Hana Burkly placed 5th and 6th overall respectively. 

 

John Shebat, Michael Pettinichi, Philip Hu, and Gregory DeRosa placed 1st in the 200yd Medley Relay with a state qualifying time. In the 200yd Freestyle, Nathan Pawlowicz placed 4th with a regional qualifying time, and Michael Ambrose placed 5th. Denny Nguyen placed 1st in the 200yd Individual Medley with a state qualifying time, and Michael Pettinichi took 5th place for Oakton. In the 50yd freestyle, John Shebat placed 2nd with a state qualifying time, and Gregory DeRosa placed 6th. In the 100yd Butterfly, Philip Hu finished 1st and Denny Nguyen placed 3rd, both with state qualifying times. Nathan Pawlowicz placed 1st in the 500yd Freestyle with a state qualifying time, and Gray Liddell finished 4th with a regional qualifying time. In the 200yd Freestyle Relay, Gregory DeRosa, Denny Nguyen, Michael Ambrose, and John Shebat finished 2nd with a state qualifying time. Philip Hu and John Shebat took 1st and 3rd place respectively in the 100yd backstroke with state qualifying times. Michael Pettinichi placed 3rd in the 100yd Breaststroke with a state qualifying time. Denny Nguyen, Michael Ambrose, Nathan Pawlowicz, and Philip Hu placed 3rd in the 400yd Freestyle Relay with a state qualifying time.

Also in the 50yd Freestyle, Gillian Crews placed 4th, and Elise Bourdelais placed 7th both with regional qualifying times. Laura Branton and Julia Capobianco placed 1st and 2nd in the 100yd Butterfly with state qualifying times. Gillian Crews placed 4th in the 100yd Butterfly with a regional qualifying time. Janet Hu placed 1st in the 100yd Freestyle with a state qualifying time. Kendall Lawhorn took 2nd for Oakton in the 500yd Freestyle with a regional qualifying time. Dylan Staniszewski, Madelynne Norton, and Mary Arscott placed 3rd, 4th, and 5th respectively in the 500yd Freestyle. In the 200yd Freestyle Relay, Gillian Crews, Elise Bourdelais, Megan Byrnes, and Laura Branton finished 1st with a state qualifying time. Megan Byrnes placed 1st in the 100yd Backstroke with a state qualifying time, and Julia Capobianco placed 4th with a regional qualifying time. Melissa Shebat and Ashley Nero placed 4th and 6th in the 100yd Breaststroke. Laura Branton, Kendall Lawhorn, Megan Byrnes, and Janet Hu placed 1st in the 400yd Freestyle Relay with a state qualifying time. 

 

Swimmers and divers with regional qualifying times/scores will advance to the AAA Northern Region Championship Meet at Oak Marr RECenter starting Tuesday, January 29th, with boys’ diving at 5:30pm, followed by girls’ diving on Wednesday, January 30th, at 5:30pm. Swim preliminaries will take place for boys on Thursday, January 31st, at 5:30pm, and for girls on Friday, February 1st. Swim finals will be held Saturday night at 5:30pm at Oak Marr RECenter in Oakton, Virginia.

Oakton Swim & Dive Finishes Second Consecutive Undefeated Season 

Chantilly, VA  - Oakton High School’s Varsity Swim and Drive teams are undefeated for the second season in a row after a win over Chantilly High School at Cub Run RECenter Friday evening. The girls won with 205 points over Chantilly’s 110. The boys won with 162 points over Chantilly’s 153. 

The meet began with the dive portion where Hana Burkly and Julia Powell took 1st and 2nd place for Oakton, and Bennett Fagan placed 2nd. 

The meet continued with consistently strong swims from Oakton giving them another undefeated season. 

Parker Ramsdell, head coach of Oakton Swim, expressed pride in his winning team, "our first goal this season was to go undefeated, and we are thrilled to have accomplished that! It was a team effort and every swimmer and diver played an important role in getting us to this point.” He continued, “our goal has now changed to defending both the boys and girls Concorde Championships. With the incredible talent in our district, it will be an incredible challenge, but one we are excited and ready for." 

Janet Hu placed 1st in the 200yd Freestyle and the 100yd Backstroke. Megan Byrnes took 1st place for Oakton in the 200yd Individual Medley and the 500yd Freestyle. Laura Branton won the 50yd Freestyle and 100yd Freestyle. Gillian Crews placed 1st in the 100yd Butterfly. Melissa Shebat took 1st place in the 100yd Breaststroke. 

Philip Hu won the 200yd Individual Medley and the 100yd Freestyle. Denny Nguyen placed 1st in the 500yd Freestyle and the 100yd Backstroke. Nathan Pawlowicz took 1st in the 200yd Freestyle and the 100yd Breaststroke. 

“I couldn’t be prouder of this team, we have worked extremely hard,” said captain Ashley Nero, a senior, as she reflected on another successful season for the girls’ team, “the girls have only lost one meet in the past four years; it’s a great way for our seniors to head out.” 

Oakton will return to the pool on Friday, January 25, for the Concorde District meet at Cub Run RECenter in Chantilly, VA. Boys’ diving will begin at 10:45am, followed by girls’ diving at 2:00pm, and swimming preliminary rounds at 5:30pm. Swimming finals will take place Saturday, January 26 at 5:30pm at Cub Run RECenter.

Oakton Swim & Dive Rules the Pool Against Herndon to Remain Undefeated 

Oakton, VA  - Oakton High School’s Varsity Swim and Drive teams continued their undefeated season with a win over Herndon High School Friday night. The girls won with a score of 197 points over Herndon’s 112. The boys won 194 to 121. 

The Cougars started off the meet by recognizing their graduating seniors. 

Following the senior recognition, Bennett Fagan, a diver for the boy’s team, took first place for Oakton with a score of 207.75 points. 

The meet continued with incredible swims across the board from Oakton. Both the boys’ and girls’ 200yd Medley Relay took 1st place. For the girls, Janet Hu, Melissa Shebat, Julia Capobianco, and Gillian Crews swam, and for the boys, John Shebat, Michael Pettinichi, Denny Nguyen, and Michael Ambrose swam. Both 200yd Freestyle relays and 400yd Freestyle relays won as well. The girls’ 200yd Freestyle relay team consisted of Laura Branton, Megan Byrnes, Elise Bourdelais, and Janet Hu. The boys’ 200yd Freestyle relay team was made of Gregory DeRosa, JT Byrne, Chris Crapco, and Philip Hu. Laura Branton, Elise Bourdelais, Kendall Lawhorn, and Janet Hu took 1st in the 400yd Freestyle relay. For the boys’ 400yd Freestyle relay, Nathan Pawlowicz, Michael Ambrose, Mason Hawkins, and Philip Hu won. 

Megan Byrnes placed 1st in the 200yd Freestyle and the 100yd Freestyle. Janet Hu took 1st in the 100yd Butterfly and the 100yd Backstroke. In the 200yd Individual Medley, Laura Branton took 1st. Gillian Crews took 1st place for Oakton in the 50yd Freestyle. Kendall Lawhorn placed 1st in the 500yd Freestyle. 

Philip Hu finished 1st in the 500yd Freestyle and the 100yd Backstroke. Denny Nguyen took 1st for Oakton in the 200yd Individual Medley and the 100yd Breaststroke. In the 50yd Freestyle, Gregory DeRosa placed 1st. Gray Liddell placed 1st in the 100yd Butterfly. Michael Ambrose won the 100yd Freestyle event. 

Oakton will return to the pool at 6:30pm Friday, January 18, against Chantilly at Cub Run RECenter in Chantilly, VA in their last dual meet of the 2012-13 season.

Oakton Swim & Dive Out-Touches Westfield 

Chantilly, VA - Oakton High School’s Varsity Swim and Drive teams competed in their fifth dual meet of the season against Westfield High School at Cub Run RECenter Friday night. The girls’ team won by a large margin with 201 points over Westfield’s 108. The boys won with 161 points beating Westfield’s 155. 

Julia Powell and Bennett Fagan dominated the dive portion of the meet, taking 1st place for both the Oakton boys and girls. Bennett Fagan scored a regional qualifying score of 214.10 points. 

Oakton’s swims were consistently strong throughout the meet. Oakton girls and boys placed 1st in the 200yd Medley Relay. Janet Hu, Melissa Shebat, Julia Capobianco, and Laura Branton swam for the girls. John Shebat, Michael Pettinichi, Philip Hu, and Gregory DeRosa swam for the boys. The Oakton girls and boys also won the 400yd Freestyle Relays. Gillian Crews, Kendall Lawhorn, Elise Bourdelais, and Megan Byrnes placed 1st for the girls. Denny Nguyen, John Shebat, Nathan Pawlowicz, and Philip Hu swam for the boys. 

Janet Hu took 1st place in the 200yd Individual Medley and in the 100yd Butterfly. Megan Byrnes won the 50yd Freestyle and 100yd Backstroke. Laura Branton placed 1st in the 200yd Freestyle. Mary Arscott took 1st place for Oakton in the 500yd Freestyle. Melissa Shebat took 1st in the 100yd Breaststroke. 

Philip Hu swam for 1st in the 100yd Butterfly and 100yd Backstroke. Denny Nguyen placed 1st in the 200yd Freestyle and 2nd in the 100yd Freestyle. John Shebat took 1st in the 50yd Freestyle. Nathan Pawlowicz won the 500yd Freestyle. 

Oakton Swim & Dive will return to the pool on January 11, 2013 at 8:30pm against Herndon High School at Oak Marr RECenter in Oakton, VA.

Oakton Swim & Dive Rules the Pool with Fourth Win of the Season 

Springfield, VA - Oakton High School’s Varsity Swim and Drive teams continued their undefeated winning streak after a win over Centreville Saturday night. The girls scored 203 points over Centreville’s 112. The boys won with 219 points with Centreville only scoring 95. 

Oakton Dive had another strong meet on Saturday. Julia Powell placed 1st for the diving portion of the night with 152.95 points. Bennett Fagan took 2nd on the boys’ side with 196.25 points. 

Oakton swimmers put in 110% effort the entire meet. On both the girls’ and boy’s teams the 200yd Medley Relay placed 1st and 2nd! Janet Hu, Melissa Shebat, Laura Branton, and Gillian Crews took 1st with Jodie Koplaski, Ashley Nero, Julia Capobianco, and Kendall Lawhorn in 2nd. Philip Hu, Nathan Pawlowicz, Denny Nguyen, and Gregory DeRosa placed 1st. John Shebat, Michael Pettinichi, Gray Liddell, and Chris Crapco followed to take 2nd. In the 200yd Freestyle Relay and the 400yd Freestyle Relay, the boys’ and girls’ both took 1st place again. 

Laura Branton took 1st place in the 200yd Individual Medley. Gillian Crews placed 1st in the 50yd Freestyle. In the 100yd Butterfly, Elise Bourdelais placed 1st. Megan Byrnes took the win in the 500yd Freestyle. Janet Hu placed 1st in the 100yd Backstroke. In the 100yd Breaststroke, Melissa Shebat took 1st place for the team. 

Philip Hu placed 1st in both of his individual events – the 200yd Individual Medley an the 100yd Backstroke. Nathan Pawlowicz placed 1st in the 200yd Freestyle. Michael Ambrose won the 50yd Freestyle. Denny Ngyen placed 1st in the 100yd Butterfly. Mason Hawkins placed 1st in the 100yd Freestyle. In the 500yd Freestyle, Andrew Sargent took 1st place. Michael Pettinichi took 1st place for the team in the 100yd breaststroke. 

Oakton will return to the pool at 6:30pm Friday, January 4, 2013, against Westfield at Cub Run RECenter, in Chantilly, VA.

Oakton Swim & Dive: 3-0 After Win Over Robinson 

Oakton, VA  - Oakton High School’s Varsity Swim and Drive teams competed in a quad meet last night at Oak Mar RECenter, with Robinson, Langley, and James Madison. Oakton girls placed first overall and scored 201 points over Langley (188), James Madison (124), and Robinson (114). The boys came in second with 160.5 points to James Madison (208.5) with Robinson (154.5) and Langley (103.5) following. The meet was scored as a dual meet for Oakton against Robinson, resulting in Oakton’s third win of the season, leaving them undefeated. 

Freshman, Bennett Fagan scored 3rd overall in the Boys 1m Diving with 205.8 points, his third regional qualifying score. 

Oakton had strong swims throughout the night for both the boys and the girls, but the girls dominated the meet. All three of Oakton’s girls’ relays placed 1st Friday night. The 200yd Medley Relay team consisted of Janet Hu, Melissa Shebat, Julia Capobianco, and Gillian Crews. The 200yd Freestyle Relay was swam by Laura Branton, Megan Byrnes, Elise Bourdelais, and Gillian Crews. Janet Hu, Laura Branton, Kendall Lawhorn, and Megan Byrnes made up the 400yd Freestyle relay. 

Philip Hu placed 1st in the 100yd Butterfly and 2nd in the 200yd Freestyle overall. Denny Nguyen placed 2nd in the 100yd Backstroke and 4th in the 200yd Individual Medley. Nathan Pawlowicz placed 2nd in the 500yd Freestyle. Michael Pettinichi placed 2nd in the 100yd Breaststroke. 

Janet Hu won the 50yd Freestyle (22.88) and 100yd Freestyle (51.13). Megan Byrnes, a freshman, won her two individual events as well – 200yd Freestyle (1:56:54) and 500yd Freestyle (5:01.95). Laura Branton placed 1st in the 100yd Butterfly and 2nd in the 200yd Individual Medley. Julia Capobianco placed 2nd in the 100yd Butterfly and 3rd in 100yd Backstroke. Gillian Crews came in closely to Branton and Capobianco and scored 3rd in the 100yd Butterfly. 

Oakton will return to the pool at 6:00pm Saturday, December 15, against Centreville at Audrey Moore RECenter, in Springfield, VA.

Oakton Conquers Chantilly Chargers 

Chantilly, VA  - Oakton High School’s Varsity Swim and Drive teams went head-to-head with Chantilly High School on Friday night at Cub Run RECenter. Both Oakton’s boys and girls won for the second week in a row, with the girls’ team scoring 195 points over Chantilly girls with 120 points. The boys scored a total of 176 points over Chantilly’s 139. 

The Cougars started off the meet with consistently solid dives. Freshman, Bennett Fagan, took 2nd place for the boys with a region-qualifying score, and Joey Barbaris took 3rd place. On the girls’ side, Julia Powell, also a freshman, took 1st place with Hana Burkly in 2nd.  

The meet continued with strong swims from Oakton. In both the boys and girls 200yd Medley Relay, Oakton placed 1st. John Shebat, Nathan Chen, Denny Nguyen, and Gregory DeRosa swam for the boys. Megan Byrnes, Melissa Shebat, Gabriela Galvez, and Nicki Powell swam for the girls.  

Kendall Lawhorn received 1st place in both of her individual events - 200yd Freestyle and 500yd Freestyle. Megan Byrnes also placed 1st in her two individual events – 100yd Freestyle and 100yd Backstroke. 

Gregory DeRosa placed 1st in 50yd Freestyle and 2nd in 100yd Freestyle. Denny Nguyen placed 1st in 100yd Butterfly and 2nd in 200yd Freestyle. John Shebat scored 2nd place in both of his individual events – 200yd Individual Medley and 100yd Backstroke. 

Oakton will return to the pool at 6:00pm Friday, December 14, against Robinson at Oak Marr for their third meet of the season.

Oakton Starts Season Strong Defeating Herndon 

Herndon, VA  - Oakton High School’s Varsity Swim and Drive teams started off the season with a win over Herndon High School Friday night at the Herndon Community Center. The girls won with 205 points over Herndon’s 107. The Oakton boys scored 198 points, while the Herndon boys scored 117.  

The Cougar divers began their season with consistently solid dives. Bennett Fagan and Julia Powell, both Oakton freshmen, took 1st place for the boys and girls. Fagan also received a region-qualifying score of 213 in his first high school meet. 

Oakton swimmers dominated the pool all night long. In both the boys and girls 200yd Medley Relay, Oakton placed 1st. Philip Hu, Michael Pettinichi, Denny Nguyen, and Nathan Pawlowicz swam for the boys. Julia Capobianco, Melissa Shebat, Gillian Crews, and Elise Bourdelais swam for the girls. In the 200yd Individual Medley, Denny Nguyen, Nathan Chen, Mason Hawkins, and Andrew Sargent took 1st through 4th place sweeping the event. Gillian Crews, Elise Bourdelais, Emily Krisanda, and Madelynne Norton swept the 50yd freestyle. 

Philip Hu placed 1st in both 50yd Freestyle and 100yd Butterfly. Denny Nguyen placed first in both of his individual events as well – 200yd Individual Medley and 100yd Backstroke. Michael Pettinichi placed 1st in 100yd Breaststroke and 3rd in 200yd Freestyle. 

Julia Capobianco received 1st place in her two individual events – 200yd Freestyle and 100yd Butterfly. Gillian Crews placed 1st in both the 50yd Freestyle and 100yd Freestyle. Elise Bourdelais placed 1st in 500yd Freestyle and 2nd in 50yd Freestyle. 

Oakton will return to the pool at 6:30pm Friday, December 7, against Chantilly at Cub Run RECenter.

Oakton Boys and Girls Swim & Dive Teams Win AAA Northern Region Title 

Oakton, VA  - Oakton High School’s Varsity Boys and Girls Swim and Dive teams won the Virginia AAA Northern Region Championship this week at Oak Marr RECenter. The boys scored 281.5 points to finish first over Woodson (250) and Madison (217). The girls scored a winning 245 points with West Potomac (190) and Langley (181) in second and third. 

This is the first time in Oakton’s history that the girls’ team has won the region title. The boys have won the regional title three times in the past four years. It has been ten years since a school in the Northern Region held the Regional title for both boys and girls at the same time. 

Sophomore, Janet Hu, broke two regional records at the meet – 100yd Freestyle (49.52) and 100yd Backstroke (53.76). Both swims qualified as Automatic All-American (AAA) times. In addition, she brought the Cougar girls 400 freestyle relay from behind to win the race with an All-American Consideration (AAC) qualifying time of 3:30.96.  

Diver, Joe LeBerre, placed 3rd at the Northern Region Boys Dive Finals with 461.40 points. He scored 16 points for Oakton’s overall score, and will move onto the State competition in two weeks. Cougar diver, Andy Berger placed 13th overall.

In the Boys 50yd Freestyle, Carter Sharer tied for 3rd with a State qualifying time.

In the Boys 100yd Butterfly, Philip Hu and Carter Sharer placed 3rd and 4th both with State qualifying times.

In the Boys 100yd Breaststroke, Ryan Santoro placed 11th with a State qualifying time. 

In the Girls 100yd Breaststroke, Melissa Shebat placed 14th with a State qualifying time. 

In the Boys 400yd Freestyle Relay, Carter Sharer, Conor Murphy, Brian Phillips, and Philip Hu placed 1st with a State qualifying time.

Oakton Swim & Dive Wins Concorde District 

Chantilly, VA  - Oakton High School’s Varsity Swim and Drive teams took the Concorde District Title at Cub Run Recreation Center on Saturday night. The Oakton Cougars scored a winning 483 points for the girls with Chantilly (371.5) in second and Westfield (334.5) in third place. For the boys Oakton scored 506 points to take the win with Chantilly (412) and Westfield (332.5) coming in second and third. 

"This weekend was a great accomplishment for our entire team,” said, Parker Ramsdell, Oakton’s Head Swim Coach. “Our divers put us in a great position, with all four boys and all four girls scoring points, highlighted by Joe LeBerre's All-American Consideration performance.”  

Diver, Joe LeBerre, placed 2nd for the boys with 473.5 points and an AAC performance, and Andy Berger placed sixth with 276.3 points. Both LeBerre and Berger will move onto the AAA Northern Region Championship Meet at Oak Marr. No girls placed in the top 6th, but two of Oakton’s girls placed in the top 10 – Hana Burkly placed 8th and Grace Wagner placed 10th.  

Coach Ramsdell added, “winning the district meet was one of our goals at the start of the season and I am so proud of all of our swimmers for their dedication. Numerous swims stood out, including Denny Nguyen's late charge in the 200 IM, Madelynne Norton's come back in the 500 free, and Philip Hu's anchor leg of the 200 freestyle relay, along with so many other remarkable races and time drops. Our team spirit was out of this world and helped inspire many of our swimmers to best times. If we continue to swim with this intensity, we will have a great chance next weekend at Regionals." 

Janet Hu, Melissa Shebat, Gillian Crews, and Ashley Doran set the Concorde District record for the 200yd Medley Relay with a time of 1:48.36, an AAC qualifying time. Janet Hu placed 1st in the 200yd Individual Medley also meeting the AAA cut. Laura Branton placed 2nd in 50yd Freestyle with a Region qualifying time. Gillian Crews, who placed 4th, and Stephanie Hallock, who placed 7th, also swam Region qualifying times. Swim preliminaries will take place for girls on Thursday, February 2nd and for boys on Friday, February 3rd. Swim finals will be held Saturday night at 5:30pm at Oak Marr.

Oakton Swims a Perfect 7-0 Season 

Springfield, VA  - Oakton High School’s Varsity Swim and Drive teams took to the water in the last dual meet of the season against Robinson Friday night at Audrey Moore RECenter. The Oakton Cougars beat Robinson for the third time this season. The boys won 190 - 125, and the girls won 190 – 124, resulting in an undefeated season for the Oakton Cougars with seven wins. 

Denny Nguyen took 1st for the team in 100yd Backstroke and 2nd in 100yd Butterfly. Philip Hu finished 1st in 200yd Individual Medley. Carter Sharer placed 1st in 50yd Freestyle. Conor Murphy finished 1st in 100yd Freestyle. Brian Phillips placed 1st in 500yd Freestyle. Ricky Menendez placed 1st in 100yd Breaststroke. 

Ashley Doran placed 1st in 50yd Freestyle and 100yd Backstroke. Janet Hu finished 1st in 100yd Butterfly. Kendall Lawhorn took 1st in 500yd Freestyle. Laura Branton finished 1st in 100yd Breaststroke. 

“We worked so hard this year as a team, and we all were so close. A lot of credit goes to our new coaches. They were so supportive and wanted us to succeed and brought a lot of spirit to the team,” said Melissa Shebat, a junior on the team. “I really think we are going to do amazing in the post season!”  

Oakton’s dive team continued to be a consistently strong force, as Joe LeBerre placed 2nd, and Andy Berger took 4th for the boys. 

Oakton returns to the pool for the Concorde District Meet next weekend, January 27th and 28th, at Cub Run

Oakton Sweeps Robinson for a 6-0 Season 

Chantilly, VA  - Oakton High School’s Varsity Swim and Drive teams went head to head with Robinson Secondary for the second time this season Friday night at Cub Run Recreation Center. Oakton’s boys and girls both had a strong meet, staying undefeated. The boys won 202 - 113, and the girls won 192 - 123. 

The meet started off with Senior Recognition Night. Dr. Banbury, Oakton High School’s principal, and Pat Full, Oakton’s Athletic Directory, were on deck to pay tribute to the team’s 20 graduating seniors.  

Cheryl Meltz, head dive coach, shared her thoughts on the night, “we got to pay tribute to our 20 wonderful senior swimmers and divers who have done so much for our team over the last 4 years. We will definitely miss their contributions to the team after they graduate. We are excited to have both our boys and girls' teams undefeated going into our last dual meet. We are hoping to finish up the season undefeated in our last dual meet next weekend and then look forward to an amazing championship season.”

Oakton Out-Touches Chantilly

Oakton, VA  - Oakton High School’s Varsity Swim and Drive teams took to the water against Chantilly High School Friday night at Oak Marr Recreation Center. Oakton’s boys and girls fought to the finish, and held tight to their undefeated record this season. The boys won 160 - 155, and the girls won 177 - 135.

Oakton dive had another week of great performances. Joe LeBerre took 1st for the team.

The meet continued with close swims across the board. The little things like coming in 6th rather than 7th, or 4th rather than 5th gave the Oakton teams the win.

Stephanie Hallock, one of the team’s captains, said, “It was a really close meet - closer than we had anticipated, but we pulled through in the end. If we keep up the hard work, there's a definite possibility of an undefeated season and a shot for the State title.”

Philip Hu placed 1st in both of his individual events – 100yd Butterfly and 100yd Backstroke. Conor Murphy placed 1st in 50yd Freestyle and 2nd in 100yd Freestyle. Ryan Santoro finished 1st in 100yd Breaststroke and 2nd in 50yd Freestyle.

Oakton Remains Undefeated After Win Over Centreville 

Oakton, VA  - Oakton High School’s Varsity Swim and Drive teams went up against Centreville Saturday night at Oak Marr Recreation Center. Oakton’s boys and girls both won again staying undefeated this season. The boys won 239 - 76, and the girls won 226 - 86. 

Oakton dive continues to have strong performances week to week. Joe LeBerre and Andy Berger placed 1st and 2nd for the boys, and Lauren Johnson, Grace Wagner, and Hana Burkly took 1st, 2nd, and 3rd for the girls. Oakton’s head dive coach, Cheryl Meltz, described the divers improvements. She said, “Joe LeBerre continues to dominate, Andy Berger is improving, and the girls are doing better and better each week. As a whole, we are continuing to improve, and we’re working to put together our district list.” 

The meet continued with another week of strong swims from both the Oakton boys and girls. Oakton boys placed first in every event. The boys also swept in four events: 200yd Freestyle, 200yd Individual Medley, 500yd Freestyle, and 100yd Breaststroke. Oakton Dominates the Pool Against Herndon 

Oakton, VA  - Oakton High School’s Varsity Swim and Drive teams went head to head with Herndon High School on Friday night at Oak Marr Recreation Center. Both Oakton’s boys and girls won for the third week in a row. The score for the boys was 194.5 - 120.5, and the score for girls was 213 – 99. 

The Cougars had another strong week of dives with Lauren Johnson taking a 1st place for the girls and Joe LeBerre placing 1st for the boys. Andy Berger, dive captain, expressed his excitement after the win. He said: “Oakton dive did extremely well tonight. We have a very young team this season and they keep setting the bar higher and higher each meet, which is very impressive. We plan to keep up the hard work throughout the season into districts and beyond. I’m so grateful to be captain this year.” 

The meet continued with strong swims from Oakton. In both the boys and girls 200yd Medley Relay, Oakton placed 1st. Conor Murphy, Ryan Santoro, Philip Hu, and Gregory DeRosa swam for the boys. Oakton Swim & Dive Crushes Westfield to Go 2 - 0 

Chantilly, VA  - Oakton High School’s Varsity Swim and Drive teams took to the water against Westfield High School Friday night at Cub Run Recreation Center. The Oakton Cougars crushed the Westfield Bulldogs despite missing numerous swimmers. Boys won 194 - 121, and the girls won 218 - 94. 

Oakton’s divers got the team off to a strong start with another week of solid dives. The positive energy created by Oakton dive pumped up the swimmers to dominate the pool and get the win. 

The Cougars, in total, were missing 12 swimmers due to the Tom Dolan and Winter Classic meets, but the team came together to succeed and win the meet against Westfield. Oakton finished hard in every race and was able to rack up some extra points by out-touching Westfield. Oakton’s Head Swim Coach, Parker Ramsdell, said “the depth of the team really showed tonight, as swim after swim kids stepped up, dropped time, and displayed they were prepared to win.” 

The highlights of the meet came mostly from the freshmen on the team as they stepped up to fill the shoes of missing upperclassmen. In his first time swimming the 100yd Butterfly, Jimmy Bailey received 3rd Place. Matt Skinner also came to break 1:00 in 100yd Backstroke Friday night. 

The girls swam exceptionally well as in the 200yd Individual Medley and 100yd Butterfly they finished 1st, 2nd, 3rd, and 4th. Kendall Lawhorn, a sophomore, finished first in both the 200yd Individual Medley and 100yd Freestyle with great drops in time. 

Next weekend the Cougars take to the water two teams. On Friday at 8:30PM Oakton will go up against Herndon at Oak Marr Recreation Center, and on Saturday at 8:30PM Oakton will go head-to-head with Centerville at Oak Marr.

Oakton Rams Robinson at First Swim Meet of Season 

Springfield, VA  - Oakton High School’s Varsity Swim and Drive teams took to the water against Robinson Friday night at South Run Recreation Club. The Oakton Cougars shut out the Robinson Rams. Boys won 194 - 121, and the girls won 193 - 122. 

The Cougars began their first meet of the season strong with the divers as Joe LeBerre broke Oaktons record for dive points in a single meet by 27 points. Head dive coach Cheryl Meltz said the “record was set by Oakton’s only all-American diver in history. Not only did he break the record, he crushed it. It’s definitely a great start for Joe this season.”  

Both the girls and boys 200yd Medley Relay received first place. With L. Branton, G. Crews, A. Doran, and S. Shebat swimming for the girls, they got a time of 1:53.99. C. Murphy, D. Nguyen, R. Santoro, and C. Sharer swam to get a 1:39.74 for the boys. 

Philip Hu received first place in two events Friday night in both the 200yd Individual Medley with a time of 1:59.49 and the 100yd Backstroke with a time of 54.35. 

New head swim coach, Parker Ramsdell, gave some feedback on the swims of the Cougars, “I feel that we’re off to a positive start this season. Swims across the board this weekend were fantastic top to bottom. While we still have work to do, this is a promising start to the 2012 season.”  

This was the first meet for Oakton’s new head coach, Parker Ramsdell. Ramsdell grew up swimming in the Northern Virginia area as a member of the Oakton Otters (NVSL), York Swim Club, and Madison Warhawks. He also helped lead the Warhawks to two Liberty District championships in 2001 and 2002. Ramsdell graduated from The University of Texas with a Bachelor’s degree in Government and Economics. Currently, in addition to coaching the Oakton Swim Team, he coaches York Swim Club’s top senior group. 

Oakton will return to the pool at 6:30 pm this Friday, December 9, against Westfield at Cub Run.
