West Potomac Girls Finish Second at Northern Region Meet Setting a Region record in the 200Y Medley Relay with an Automatic All American Time

The West Potomac girls finished second at the Northern Region Swim and Dive Championships, January 31, 2012 - February 4, 2012 at the Oak Marr Recreation Center. The girls finished with 190 point to 245 for first place Oakton.

The girls 200Y Medley Relay team of Reanna Dona, Hellen Moffitt, Sara Bertram and Maxine Clifford set a new region record with a time of 1:46.19 which was also a high school Automatic All American time. The previous record was 1:46.80 set by the team from Fairfax High School of Gehrke, Baumgardner, DeOrnellas and Harvey in 2009. The Wolverine girls finished second in the 400Y Free Relay with a time of 3:32.21 which was a high school All American Consideration time. In the preliminary session the team of Carolyn Murphy, Melanie Bomberg, Kristine Pinter and Maddy Bolger finished 17th with a time of 1:45.41. West Potomac will compete again in all three relays at the state meet in two weeks.

Individually the Wolverines were led by Junion Hellen Moffitt who finished 2nd in the 100Y Back and 3rd in the 100Y Free. Hellen swam an All American Consideration time in her 100Y Backstroke event with a time of 55.96 seconds. Senior Reanna Dona finished 3rd in the 100Y Back and 4th in the 50Y Free, both in state meet qualifying times. Sophomore Sara Bertram finished 3rd in the 100Y Butterfly and was 7th in the 200Y IM, both were personal best efforts and qualified her for the state meet. The final Wolverine earning individual points for the team was Freshamn Maxine Clifford with a 6th place finish in the 50Y Free and an 8th place finish in the 100Y Back. The 50Y Free time was a personal best time for Maxine and she also qualified for the state meet in both events. In the preliminary session Sophomore Carolyn Murphy finished 20th in the 500Y Freestyle.

The girls improved upon their fourth place finish at regions last year and will next compete in the VA State AAA Championships on February 17 and 18th at the George Mason University Natatorium in Fairfax, VA. The West Potomac girls finished 5th at states last year in Virginia Beach and look to improve upon that performance this year.

On the boys side, West Potomac sent two relay teams to the region meet. In the preliminary session the team of Sophomore Cyrus Adams-Mardi, Freshmen Will Rausch, Senior Trevor Jenne and Senior Patrick Murphy finished 19th with a time of 1:48.22. The team of Murphy, Senior Jack King, Adams-Mardi and Jenne finished 24th in the 400 Free Relay with a time of 3:38.99.

West Potomac girls finish fourth and the boys finish sixth in the 2012 Patriot District Swim and Dive Championships.

The West Potomac girls swim team finished fourth at the Patriot District Swim and Dive Championships with 319 points behind Woodson (414), West Springfield (353) and Lake Braddock (334). South County was fifth with 304 points followed by TC Williams (169), Annandale (114) and RE Lee (73). While the Wolverines did not quite have the depth of the Woodson or West Springfield they had some tremendous individual and relay efforts.
Senior Reanna Dona led the girls with two first place finishes, both in state meet qualifying times and setting a new Patriot District record. Reanna finished first in the 50Y Freestyle with a time of 24.43 seconds and was also first in the 100Y Backstroke with a record time of 57.95 seconds. She broke her own record set back in 2010 of 58.65 seconds.
Junior Hellen Moffitt also had two state meet qualifying times finishing first in the 100Y Freestyle with a time of 53.89 seconds and second in the 200Y Freestyle in 1:56.44. Continuing the assault on state meet qualifying times, sophomore Sara Bertram and freshman Maxine Clifford both had two state meet qualifying swims in 2nd place finishes. Sara finished second in the 200Y Individual Medley (2:11.58) and the 100Y Butterfly (58.69) while Maxine was second in the 100Y Freestyle (54.01) and the 100Y Backstroke (59.63).
In addition to Reanna, Hellen, Sara and Maxine, sophomore Carolyn Murphy also qualified for the Northern Region Swim and Dive Championships with a sixth place finish in the 500Y Freestyle with a personal best time of 5:36.83. Carolyn also finished ninth in the 200Y Freestyle with another personal best time of 2:06.03.
Other girls earning points for the Wolverines included sophomore Kristine Pinter (10th in the 200Y Free and 11th in the 100Y Fly), junior Maddy Bolger (10th in the 100Y Free and 13th in the 50Y Free), freshman Melanie Bomberg (10th in the 50 Free), freshman Jayne Orleans (11th in the 100Y Breast) and freshman Torie Bolger (12th in the 500 Free).
In relay action, all three relay teams qualified for the northern region meet and two qualified for the state championships. The team of Hellen, Reanna, Maxine and Sara took first in the 200Y Medley and the 400Y Freestyle Relays (both in state meet qualifying times) while the team of Melanie, Kristine, Carolyn and Maddy took 4th in the 200Y Freestyle Relay. In the 200Y Medley Relay the girls demolished the Patriot District record with a time of 1:47.02. The time was a state meet qualifying time, the fastest of all the northern region district medley relays and would have been good enough for All-American Consideration had electronic timing been used at the meet. The previous record of 1:50.50 was set in 2008 by Lake Braddock. The 400Y Freestyle Relay time of 3:37.51 was a state qualifying time and the second fastest time among the four districts in the northern region.
The Wolverine boys finished with 145 points behind district champion Woodson (525), West Springfield (476), Lake Braddock (282), South County (252) and Annandale (210). Rounding out the team scoring was TC Williams (121) and RE Lee (45).
The West Potomac boys were led by freshman Michael Valceanu who qualified individually for the Northern Region Championships with a sixth place finish in the 200Y Freestyle in a time of 1:53.13. He also had a seventh place finish in the 100Y Butterfly with a personal best time of 55.61 seconds.
Freshman Will Rausch and senior Patrick Murphy also had two individual efforts during the finals session at Districts. Will finished seventh in the 100Y Breaststroke with a personal best time of 1:03.46 and had another personal best time finishing 12th in the 200Y Individual Medley in 2:13.12. Patrick was ninth in the 100Y Backstroke in a personal best time of 59.56 which would have been good enough for sixth place if the meet had been swum as timed finals and Patrick finished 14th in the 200Y Freestyle with a time of 2:04.00. Others earning points for the Wolverines included senior Trevor Jenne who finished 10th in the 200Y IM and sophomore Cyrus Adams-Mardi with a 13th place finish in the 100Y Back, both had personal best efforts in their races.
The boys 200Y Medley Relay team of Trevor, Will, Michael and Patrick qualified for regions with a 5th place finish as did the 400Y Freestyle relay team of Michael, senior Jack King, Patrick and Trevor.  The 200Y Freestyle Relay team of Jack, Cyrus, freshman Lucas Perez and senior Niko Knoblauch finished seventh with a time of 1:38.99.
The Northern Region Swim and Dive Championships take place this week at the Oak Marr Recreation Center with diving on Tuesday and Wednesday, girls swimming preliminary session on Thursday, boys swimming preliminary session on Friday and swimming finals for boys and girls on Saturday. The girls team is hoping to improve upon their fourth place finish at last years region meet.

Results from the preliminary session of the Patriot District Swim and Dive Championships.

19 West Potomac Swimmers -- 11 girls and 8 boys -- will advance to the Patriot District championship swimming finals on Saturday, January 28th at 5:30 p.m. at Lee District Rec Center.
In addition to the individual events, there will be three relay events for boys and three for girls during the championship meet.
One of the most exciting races during the preliminary session Friday night came at 9:25 p.m. -- nearly four hours after the prelims meet had started.  West Potomac sophomore Kristine Pinter had to compete in a "swim-off" to determine if she would advance to finals in the 100 yard butterfly.  Because Kristine had tied for 16th place with a swimmer from Lake Braddock High School in the preliminary butterfly race, the two girls had to race the event again to see who would be 16th and who would be 17th, or first alternate.   It was a great race as their teammates and the crowd cheered wildly for both girls.  Kristine pulled away on the second fifty, reached the wall first, and secured herself a lane in Saturday's final.  Congratulations to Kristine!
And good luck to all West Potomac swimmers who will be competing at finals.
