West Potomac Girls Finish Third and Boys Finish Seventh at the 2013 Patriot District Swim and Dive Championships

The West Potomac girls swim team finished third and the boys finished seventh at the 2013 Patriot District Swim and Dive Championships held at Lee District Recreation Center on January 26th. Because of snow and an early school closing on Friday night, the district championship was swum as timed finals on Saturday.
The girls team finished with 316 points behind West Springfield (420 points) and WT Woodson (413 points). South County was fourth with 278 points followed by Lake Braddock (255 points), Annandale (178 points), TC Williams (138 points) and RE Lee (105 points). The boys team finished with 129 points behind champion WT Woodson (455 points), West Springfield (393 points), Lake Braddock (365 points), South County (274 points), Annandale (245 points) and TC Williams (143 points). The Lee Lancers completed the scoring with 53 points.
Highlights for the girls team included two new Patriot District records with senior Hellen Moffitt setting a new district record in the 100Y Butterfly and then teaming up to set a new record in the 200Y Freestyle Relay. Hellen's 100Y Butterfly time of 56.46 bettered her own record of 57.97 set in 2011. The relay team of sophomore Maxine Clifford, junior Sara Bertram, Moffitt and sophomore Melanie Bomberg set a new Patriot District record in the 200Y Freestyle Relay of 1:39.72 bettering the West Potomac record time from 2011 of 1:40.91 set by the team of Bertram, Reanna Dona, Moffitt and Maddy Bolger.
Individually the girls team was led by senior Hellen Moffitt who had first place finishes in the 100Y Butterfly and the 100Y Backstroke. Besides the record setting performance in the 100Y Butterfly, Hellen achieved a state meet qualifying time of 58.32 in winning the 100Y Backstroke. Sophomore Maxine Clifford had a second place finish in the 50Y Freestyle with a state meet qualifying time of 24.46 and also finished second in the 100Y Freestyle with a region meet qualifying time of 54.20. Junior Sara Bertram finished in third place in the 200Y Individual Medley with a state meet qualifying time of 2:10.96 and also finished third in the 100Y Backstroke with a region meet qualifying time of 1:00.75. Junior Kristine Pinter finished 6th and qualified for the region meet in the 200Y Freestyle with a time of 2:03.74. Kristine also had an eigth place finish in the 100Y Butterfly with a time of 1:05.45. Sophomore Melanie Bomberg qualified for the region meet with a sixth place finish in the 50Y Freestyle in a time of 25.98 and was also 21st in the 100Y Freestyle. Other top ten finishes for the girls included senior Maddy Bolger who finished seventh in the 50Y Freestyle (26.16) and eight in the 100Y Freestyle (57.09) and sophomore Jayne Orleans who finished tenth in the 100Y Breaststroke (1:13.84). Also earning valuable points for the girls team included senior Leigh Orleans (12th in 200Y Free and 12th in 100Y Free), junior Carolyn Murphy (14th in 200Y Free and 11th in the 500Y Free), sophomore Torie Bolger (12th in the 200Y IM and 13th in 500Y Free) and junior Jessica Metter (15th in 50Y Free and 16th in the 100Y Butterfly).
Besides the record breaking 200Y Freestyle Relay effort, the team of Betram, Clifford, Moffitt and Bomberg also teamed up to win the 200Y Medley relay in a state meet qualifying time of 1:49.49. The 400Y Freestyle Relay team of Murphy, M. Bolger, L. Orleans and Pinter finished fifth and qualified for the region meet with at time of 3:49.61.
The boys were led by sophomore Michael Valceanu who finished third in the 200 Freestyle and second in the 100Y Butterfly both in region qualifying times. His time in the 200Y Freestyle was 1:49.39 and he completed the 100Y Butterfly in 53.50 seconds. Sophomore Will Rausch qualified individually for the region meet with a sixth place finish in the 100Y Breaststroke with a time of 1:03.93. He also finished eight in the 200Y Individual Medley with a time of 2:08.40. Freshman DJ Pinter finished ninth in the 200Y Freestyle and 15th in the 100Y Butterfly. Also earning points for the boys team were junior Cyrus Adams-Mardi (12th in the 100Y Backstroke and 17th in the 200Y IM) and sophomore Jarod Worden (16th in 200Y IM and 17th in the 500Y Free).
The boys 200Y Medley Relay team of Adams-Mardi, Valceanu, Rausch and Pinter qualified for the region meet with a 5th place finish and region meet qualifying time of 1:43.00. The boys also teamed up for the 400Y Freestyle Relay and qualified for the region meet with a sixth place finish in 3:31.29.
The Northern Region Swim and Dive Championships take place this week at the Oak Marr Recreation Center with diving on Tuesday and Wednesday, boys swimming preliminary session on Thursday, girls swimming preliminary session on Friday and swimming finals for boys and girls on Saturday. The girls team is hoping to improve upon their second place finish at last year's region meet.
