Gar-Field High School Swim Teams both head into winter break 2-1 coming off of double wins against Potomac and Freedom High School. In this exciting meet the men were victorious against Potomac 127-117 and against Freedom 150-33. The women beat Potomac 112-102 and Freedom 113-60. Everyone on the team contributed to these victories, as many races were very close. Double event winners for the Indians were Bobby Sherrill and Brett Henry. Sherrill won the 50 free and 100 fly while Henry took first in the 200 IM and 500 free. The men’s strongest event was the 500 freestyle where Bibhor Gurung and Michael Turner took second and third respectively to give the Indians first, second and third place along with Henry. Other first place finishers include Tristan Zambrano in the 200 free, Tabitha Abshire in the women’s 200 free, Kayla Weldon in the 100 back, and Amanda Vellocido in the 500 free. The 400 free relays for both the men and women also took first place. The men were made up of Liam Brennan, Turner, Sherrill and Henry while the women were comprised of Weldon, Abshire, Maria Rivera and Vellocido. Bibhor Gurung, Alyssa Spencer, Brennan, Zachary Saylor and Maria Rivera all had strong swims for second place finishes in their events. The most notable time drop for the Indians comes from Anna Pereira who dropped 9 seconds off her time from last week in the 100 freestyle. The Indians return after winter break to swim Hylton on January 3.
The Gar-Field Indians Swim Team had their first meet of the season on Friday night against Woodbridge High School. The men were defeated by a score of 202- 79 while the women were defeated by a score of 205-70. The Gar-Field women’s team was lead by strong swims from seniors Kelly Henry and Shelby Jordan. Kelly finished first in both the 200 IM and 500 freestyle, breaking her own school record in the 200 IM by one tenth of a second with a best time of 2:09.72. Shelby had first place finishes in the 100 fly and 50 freestyle. Another set of great swims on the women’s side came from the medley relay team of Kayla Weldon, Kelly Henry, Shelby Jordan and Tabitha Abshire. The four also came in second in the 400 freestyle relay.
The men’s team was lead by sophomore returner Brett Henry and newcomer Bobby Sherrill. Brett went a best time of 2:10.09 in the 200 IM for a second place finish and came in first in the 100 breaststroke. Sherrill came in first in the 100 butterfly and second in the 100 freestyle in a close race. The men’s relay team of Lawson Long, Liam Brennan, Brett Henry and Bobby Sherrill came in second in the 200 Freestyle Relay. Freshman Tristan Zambrano had a nice swim in the 200 freestyle coming in third place in his first high school meet.
