Boys Mixed Age Free Relay

Breaks 24 Year Old League Record

by Jennifer Dermody

Boys Free 200M Mixed Age Relay league record holders:

Cal Dermody (12), Vincent Cleal (10), Ben Zajic (17) and Matt Jones (14).

The Burke Centre Penguins Boys Free 200M Mixed Age Relay Team stepped up their game today in the last regular meet of the season breaking a relay record that has stood for the past 24 years.  Vincent Cleal, Cal Dermody, Matt Jones and Ben Zajic took this swim to new extremes.   They blew the old record out of the water with a new league record of 1:53.26.  That is over 2.5 seconds faster than the old time of 1:55.93 that was set back in 1986.

These four boys are the best freestyle swimmers in their age groups.  Each has worked hard this summer to improve their portion of the race which involves a 50 meter freestyle swim.  Two of the swimmers in the group, Cal Dermody and Matt Jones, currently hold team records in the 50 Meter Freestyle Individual event.  Because this was the last regular meet of the season for the Penguins, this was their last opportunity to compete together for this title.

Although the regular summer swim season ended with this amazing victory, these swimmers aren't out of the water quite yet.  Next week the boys will compete in Colonial League Divisionals seeking records and victories in their individual events followed by All-Stars on August 7th.
