Silver Spring, MD – July 21, 2011– Members of the Ashton Alligators Swim Team and Ashton DeMoss Recreation Club came together last night to raise $4000 in support of a devoted swim team parent volunteer who is battling breast cancer.
In response to suggestions from swimmers, coaches announced last week that the theme of the team’s annual “Boys vs. Girls Meet” would be “Pretty in Pink,” in honor of breast cancer awareness. The swim team purchased a pink cap for each swimmer, and attendees were encouraged to wear pink. Several days prior to the event, a decision was made to use the evening as an opportunity to raise funds for the honoree, who underwent surgery on July 12, and her family. Coaches, lifeguards, parents, and swimmers embraced the opportunity to donate items and services to a silent auction, where attendees were able to bid on swim lessons, massages, art classes, babysitting services, handcrafted jewelry, tickets to sporting events, home cooked meals, and more. Other fundraising activities included a raffle, chair massages, and a concession sale. In addition to the usual swim meet races, everyone was encouraged to participate in fun swim events, including kickboard races, sidestroke chase, and a buddy swim. The highlight of the evening was a pie toss, which afforded children the opportunity to throw whipped topping pies in the faces of their favorite adults, including the Ashton Alligators Coach.
Pool Board President, Bruce Kalen, commented after the event: “I have never been more proud of being associated with the group of families we have at the pool. I would have never believed this event could have gone off the way it did. With the heat and short notice, we could not have asked for more.”
Ashton Demoss Recreation Club is a private community pool located in the Ashton community of <place><city>Silver Spring</city>, <state>Maryland</state></place>. The Ashton Alligators is a team of 114 swimmers competing in the I Division of the Montgomery County Swim League.
