Glenmont Finishes Fifth
Although predicted to finish fifth by almost 150 points by reachforthewall.com, the Gators shocked Division K at halftime, only 40 points out of first. The Gators lack of younger swimmers got the better of them in the breaststroke and butterfly events, falling to fifth, only 4 points behind the fourth place Whetstone Whales. Had it not been for a controversial disqualification of an All Star time in a decisive first place finish, the Gators would have surely had fourth place and been in a competition for third. Three pool records were set during the meet, and one by Glenmont's Carlos Espinoza in 13-14 50 SCM Freestyle. The Gators bid fairwell to their two graduating seniors, Marvin Garcia and Adin Gosine. The Glenmont coaching staff could not be prouder of their team this year, as despite competing in a division where every team was more than double their size they were able to have some great meets. The final results in Division K are:
Norbeck Grove: 903
Clopper's Mill: 869.5
Somerset: 781
Whetstone: 730.5
Glenmont: 726.4
Montgomery Square: 564.5
The final standings in the division are:
Norbeck Grove 5-0 Relay(1) Divisionals (1): 60
Clopper's Mill 3-2 Relay (2) Divisionals (2): 42
Somerset 3-2 Relay (3) Divisionals (3): 36
Whetstone 3-2 Relay (4) Divisionals (4): 30
Glenmont 1-4 Relay (5) Divisionals (5): 12
Montgomery Square 0-5 Relay (6) Divisionals (6): 0
Glenmont defeated by Clopper's Mill
For the second week, lack of depth hurt the Gators who were downed 440-327 by the Marlins of Clopper's Mill. With numerous no shows the Gators didn't stand a chance against the home team's full squad, falling behind early in the meet and seeing the gap widen after the half. Glenmont hopes to recover and have a full squad at Divisionals this Saturday. It will be a challenge to make up ground next weekend, but the challenge should be eased while swimming at home, in the fastest pool in the division. Going into Divisionals, Norbeck Grove has a commanding lead with 40 points followed by Clopper's Mill (26), Somerset (24), Whetstone (22), Glenmont (8), and Montgomery Square (0). Divisional points are as follows: 20,16,12,8,4,0. The Gators are hoping that their team speed can come through and compensate for their lack of depth.
Glenmont Struggles at Relays
Despite missing 6 out of 22 relay teams, the Gators were able to claim the fifth spot in the Division K Relay Carnival, finishing in front of Montgomery Square but behind Norbeck Grove, Cloppers Mill, hosts Somerset, and Whetstone. Gator Relays had seven, second place finishes and were only able to put one team (Mixed 11-12 200 SCM Freestyle) through to All Star Relays on August 1.
