2011 Season

Individual All-Stars

BL Swim All Star July 31st 2011 213.jpg

Seven Foxes swam in Individual All-Stars.  Those of us who didn't get to swim today know that it is special to be among the fastest 16 in an event when there are 9000 or so swimmers in the league. They set five team records.

Phoebe Bacon won the backstroke and the butterfly.  She got two best times  -- 19:03 in the back and 17:21 in the fly.  They are both new team records.  She missed the County record by just .45 of a second in the back and by a mere .25 of a second in the  fly.

Ben Long Zuo finished 2nd in both the backstroke and the butterfly.  He moved all the

BL Swim All Star July 31st 2011 128.jpg

way up from 8th in the back and 5th in the fly.  They were both best times  -- 20.18 in the back and 17.41 in the fly.  He dropped almost a second in the back and more than a second in the fly.  They are both team records.  The back record dated back to 1979 and belonged to Pete Fischetti who still holds the  9-10 and 11-12 back records.

Lisa Deng also got two best times.  She went a 1:10.56 in the 100 IM.  She dropped 2 seconds and moved up from 14th to 10th.   She went 1:18.38 in the breast and placed 7th.  This is also a new team record, previously belonging to one of the Fox all-time greats Tish Bucher (set back in 1980).

Rookie Brett Feyerick did amazing in his first all-stars.  He was 17.62 in the free and 18.84 in the fly.  He came in 9th and 7th.

Andy Rothstein continues to be very fast.  He went 29.40 and placed 7th in the Free.  This time would have been a team record (formerly held by the Top 16 in the Country Brian Salcetti) except that Andy broke it earlier this month.    He went 35.14 for an 8th place finish in the back.

Sophie Bacon was similarly impressive.  She was 19.24 and 10th in the back.  She was 17.03 and 12th in the fly.

Reid Bacon went 40.14 which is almost a second faster than his best time.

All-Star Relays

MM BL Swaim All Star Reley July 30th 2011 150.jpg

At All-Star Relays, the Foxes celebrate their second place finish in D Division.

The Boys 8&under Medley Team (Josh Wolfson, Cameron Barclay, Ben Long Zuo and Brett Feyerick) won All-Stars.  They moved up from second and dropped more

than 3 seconds.  Earlier Ben Long and Brett teamed up with Rebecca Stolz and Phoebe Bacon to finish 3rd in the Mixed Free.  They dropped 3 seconds since Relay Carnival.  The Big Sisters got into the act.  Sophie Bacon, Becky Wolfson, Mei Mei Zuo and Brooke Barclay placed 4th in the 9-10 Medley.  They were 2 and half seconds faster than they were at Relay Carnival.

The Foxes work hard but they also play hard.  Some Foxes got together at Raft Night to get psyched up for All-Stars.

Divisionals

Tallyho scored 894 points in the D Divisionals.  They finished in second, just 14 points behind Old Georgetown.  Only one second-place team scored more points than the Foxes.  The Foxes scored more points than 8 teams that won their Divisionals.  Despite the heat, the very warm water and the hour-long delay, the Foxes earned 50 Best Times!  Another 10 times they were less than a tenth of a second off the best time.   Brooke Barclay, Brian Boman, Brett Feyerick. Sarah O'Brien, Avikar Periwal, Kerry Scott, Molly Silverberg, Rebecca Stolz, Anya Vinogradsky, and Mei Mei Zuo got all best times.

Brian Boman and Connie Xu dropped more than three seconds in events.  Katy

Verboncoeur dropped more than two seconds in one.  .    Rachel Caplan, Lis Deng, Brett Feyerick Sarah O'Brien, Kerry Scott, Anya Vinogradsky, and Sophie Whiteway all dropped more than a second.

The Foxes beat their seed more often than not.  Out of the 92 splashes, they beat their seed 29 times, maintained their seed 42 times and lost places only 21 times.  For example, Sophe White went from 11th to 6th in the Breaststroke.  Alex Zhang moved up from 4th to 2nd in Free. 5th to 3rd in the back, 5th to 3rd in the Breast and sat out the IM to swim both Relays. Rachel Caplan went from 4th to 2nd in the Free.  Kerry Scott went from 6th to

4th in the back.  Brett Feyerick moved up from 4th to 2nd in the Fly.  Sophie Bacon moved up from 3rd to win the Fly (she also won the back).

Phoebe Bacon won all three events.  She was undefeated for the season.  Lisa Deng and Sophie Bacon won two events.  Andy Rothstein and Ben Long Zuo each won an event.

The Girls Free Relay of Brooke Barclay, Laney Williams, Rachel Caplan and Phoebe Bacon set a new Team Record in the Free Relay. .  They went a  1:57.05.  The record was over two minutes before they started their assault on it this summer.

To get psyched up for Divisionals, the Foxes went to watch Cars II.

Potomac Invitational Relay Carnival

Step right up to Big Tent for the  9th annual Potomac Invitational Relay Carnival.  The Den had never looked better.  Everyone was glad that the well dressed Mrs.

Bacon did the decorating and not Christo.  Rumors that Francisco took HGH turned out to be untrue.  The very large animal in the chair was actually a Barclay Bear.  Ringmaster Twomey tried to keep order with her very quiet air horn.  (She was the Ringmaster who brought vuvuzelas to the Montgomery Square Meet.) Even the air horn couldn't tell the timers where to go. The Foxes knew what to do:  Swim Fast!  The Foxes won an impressive 9 relays.  Alice Aubert, Bertie Aubert, Reid Bacon, Lexi Cochran, Sammy Daggett, Kyra Du, Connor Farney,  Rebecca Fried, Aliya Klein, Whitney Klein, Paulina Leder, Sydney Levine, David Mishkin, William Mishkin, Nayantara Mukerji, Anna Mollard, Eric Mollard,

Ellen Newbold, Sarah O'Brien, Indra Periwal, Lawrence Redmond, Eric Rosenthal, Shoshana Rosenthal, Katie Rothstein, Cyrus Safiran, Darian Safiran, Nick Shawley,  Rebecca Stolz, Nathan Subrahmanian and Juliet Twomey all were on winning relays.

Merrimack Park Meet

Fox witches and wizards picked up their brooms and flew to Merrimack Park.

DSC_1058.jpg

Andy Rothstein, Kyle Barclay, Reid Bacon held on to their brooms to get an unexpected sweep in the very first event.  The 9-10 girls swept 3 out of 4 events.  (Sophie Bacon, Brooke Barclay, Kyra Du, Becky Wolfson, Mei Mei Zuo).  As always, the Foxes excelled in the fly.  Sophie Bacon, Becky Wolfson and Mei Mei Zuo swept the 9-10 fly.  Laney Williams, Sarah O'Brien and Radhika Mukerji and Alex Zhang, Avikar Periwal and Chris Cochran swept 2 of the next 3 events.  The Foxes kept the roll going through the Relays.  Ian Rosenthal, Andy Rothstein, Alex Zhang and Ben Long Zuo won the Boys Free Relay.  The girls went 1-2 in the Relay.  (Becky Wolfson, Laney Williams, Rachel Caplan, Phoebe Bacon, Brooke Barclay, Radhika Mukerji, Kerry Scott, and Sophie Whiteway).  Phoebe Bacon, Andy Rothstein, Alex Zhang and Ben Long Zuo swept their events.    Swimming his final meet,  for example, Conway Xu dropped a Kit-like 5 seconds in his IM.  It was also the final dual meet for Molly Kiniry,  Cate McCaffery and Amelia Oliver.   With a speedy 50 Fly, Amelia Oliver earned a trip to Hallowell.

DSC_1057.jpg

Ben Williams also dropped a lot of time.  Ian Rosenthal got all best times.  Brian Tsau did as well. Of course Brian was swimming a lot of events  for the 1st time. The distance specialist finally got to swim the very long 100s as he swam up to replace our Men who were at Senior Champs.   Phoebe Bacon set Merrimack Park Pool records in back, breast and fly.  She joined Becky Wolfson, Laney Williams and Rachel Caplan to break the Pool Record in the Free Relay.  Ben

On Wednesday night, the Super Foxes flew to the Nest.  On most summers, the Foxes and the Eagles meet in the Thunder Bowl.  Of course, not this summer.  There was, however,  the traditional fast swimming.  Lawrence Redmond won the first event.  Dan Wei Zuo, Josh Wolfson, Cameron Barclay, Whitney Klein, and Rebecca Stolz won 6 of the next 8 events.  The fly-loving Foxes finished the meet in similar fashion.  Josh Wolfson, Cameron Barclay, Alex Smelson, Mei Mei Zuo, Brooke Barclay, Kyle Barclay, Sarah 0'Brien,  Eric Rosenthal and Amelia Oliver all won fly events.  In between the Foxes were equally fast.  Abby

Newburger "quietly" dropped  14 seconds in IM.  Melissa Finke dropped 8 in free. Josh Pilarski dropped 12 seconds in 4 events.  Cameron Barclay, Chris Ervin, Daniel Fried, Maggie Hillman, Jeremy Oblon, Gaby Pilarski, Colin Redmon, Nick Seig and Stefan Tesliuc all dropped a lot of time in events. Chris Cochran and Mei Mei Zuo swept their events.  Brooke Barclay, Cameron Barclay, Amelia Oliver, Lawrence Redmond, and Alex Smelson won multiple events.

Eldwick Meet

The Foxes were in Paradise on Wednesday night.  The Twomeys and Farneys felt right at home. All the Foxes enjoyed themselves in Paradise despite the shark-infested water.  It turns out that a Fox can outswim a Shark.  Reid Bacon won the 1st event and the Foxes

DSC_0019.jpg

went on to win 12 out of the 1st 13 events.  Reid swept his events.  Brooke Barclay, Chris Cochran, and Josh Wolfson also swept theirs.  Talking about sweeping, Radhika Mukerji, Lexi Cochran, Mei Mei Zuo, Sarah O'Brien and Phoebe Bacon cleaned up the beach in the second event.  Even though the beach was spotless, our youngest kits, Dan Wei Zuo, Finn Bacon and Evan Price took out the broom on the very next event.  The future looks very good as Olivia Palmer, Whitney Klein, Isabel Apfel and Emily Spitz also swept the free.  Emily dropped an impressive 8 seconds. Josh Pilarski and Annika Subrahmanian also dropped 8 seconds in events.  Josh dropped an amazing 18 and a

"mere" 3 seconds in his other events and as a result received an engraved invitation to the Royal Wedding. Like a good Kit, 18-year-olds Cate McCaffery and Amelia Oliver also had huge drops. Intermediate and little sized Foxes, Hannah Cox, Arthur Didinsky, Rebecca Fried, Jermy Oblon and Evan Price also joined in the Fun.  Isabel Apfel, Charlotte Beauvais, Rebecca Fried, Anna Mollard, Sarah O'Brien, Michael Palmer, Josh Pilarkski, Colin Redmond had multiple best times.

both Opening Relays. Winston Liu, Brian Tsau, Andy Rosenthal, Alex Zhang, Evi Liu, Lisa Deng, Olivia Parven, Katy Verboncoeur, Lawrence Redmond, Conway Xu, Chris Cochran, Brian Boman, Amelia Oliver, Cate McCaffery, Molly Kiniry and the perennial prodigal daughter Brigid McCaffery.  Fortunately many of  those Foxes are much younger than 18.  The Women went on to sweep the Free, Back and Fly (Lisa Deng, Evi Liu, Amelia Oliver, Olivia Parven, Katy Verboncoeur). Almost 15, Chris Cochran, Avikar Periwal, Brian Tsau, and Alex Zhang swept the IM and the Fly.  The Kit Foxes are also very fast as the 8&under boys swept all 4 strokes.  (Cameron Barclay, Brett Feyerick, Josh Wolfson,

Ben Long Zuo).  They outscored the Gators 52-12.  It will be a long time before they graduate.  The Foxes sadly have to say good bye to Molly, Cate, Amelia and Conway. They have been outstanding Fox es for a long time.  The Foxes congratulated high school graduates Brian and Winston who get to return next year. While the half time show was long, the Foxes were fast in the water.  Honorees Brian and Conway got all best times.  Juliet Twomey, Sophie Whiteway, Becky Wolfson, Josh Wolfson, Connie Xu also had all best times.  Phoebe Bacon, Lisa Deng and Ben Long Zuo swept their events. Olivia Parven and Josh Wolfson completed the sweep of their age groups. Brian Tsau, Alex Zhang and Avikar Periwal combined to sweep the 13-14 boys events.

Relay Carnival

The Foxes won three relays at Relay Carnival.  They finihsed third in a very fast D Division.  Early on the very quick Brett Feyerick, Sophie Whiteway, Phoebe Bacon and Ben Long Zuo won the

8&under mixed free.  As always, the Foxes did even better once they got out of the Free and into Stroke.  In the 1st event of the 2nd half, Brett and Ben Long teamed up with Cameron Barclay and Josh Wolfson to upset an amazingly fast OGC team.  The Big Sisters couldn't let their little brothers have all the fun.  Sophie Bacon joined Becky Wolfson, Mei Mei Zuo and Brooke Barclay to win the girls 9-10 medley.

On Wednesday, Quintus Petillius Cerialis (aka Abby) marched the Roman Vulpes to

the Loch (and definitely NOT the Delta Tau Chi Frat House).  The Foxes wanted to ensure there were no Monsters in the Loch so they did a little cleaning early on.  Kyle Barclay, Cyrus Safiran and Ben Long Zuo swept the 1st event.  Not trusting the cleaning to her little brother, Mei Mei Zuo and Katie Rothstein, Sydney Levine, Ellen Newbold, Cece Price and Caroline Beauvais went an impressive  1st through 6th in the free.  Chris Cochran and Connie Xu swept their events.    By then the Loch was clean and ready for some fast swimming. As a result, Reid Bacon, Cameron and Kyle Barclay, Radhika Mukerji, Josh Wolfson, Dan Wei and Mei Mei Zuo won multiple events.  In addition, Caroline Beauvais, Vlad Khovayko, Duncan McAree and Nick Seig all dropped at least 8 seconds.  Fletcher Bautz, Mason Goldstein, Allison

Jacobs, Molly Kiniry, Jeremy Oblon, Nathan

Oliver, Michael Palmer, Gaby Pilarski, Eric Rosenthal, Cyrus Safiran and Annika Subrahmanian also continued to drop time in huge chunks.  Sophie Apfel dropped time in all 4 events and won a free trip to swim with the Dolphins.  Joining Sophie on the trip were her little sister Isabel, Whitney Klein,

Allison Jacobs and Duncan McAree.

OGC Meet

At the OGC meet, the Foxes got all dressed up to race.  A little  green with envy

for all the fun back at the Den, they returned from Ireland.   They took the temperature of their hot sauce.  They put down their tic tac toe and twister games.  They turned into leopards and octupi.  And Francisco the Fox turned into Oscar the Grouch. They lobbied for candy (not to be eaten till after the meet). Although a little yellow, they were not afraid to race the mighty Dolphins.   Fortunately, the 9-10 girls showed up.  They swept every event, outscoring the Dolphins  54 to 10.  Brooke Barclay, Sophie Bacon, Indra Periwal, Becky Wolfson and Mei Mei Zuo.

MM BL DW Swim A Meet July 2nd 2011 327.jpg

Sophie Bacon swept her events and Brooke completed the sweep of the age group.  Phoebe Bacon and Lisa Deng also swept their events.  The Foxes had an awesome second hafl.  Winston Liu and Lisa Deng  won the 1st 2 events after the break.  And the Foxes went on a tear ending with Rachel Caplan, Andy Rosenthal and Lisa Deng winning the last 3 individual events.    All told the Foxes won 7 out of the 10 Fly events.  And of course the very fast Foxes got even faster.  Kerry Scott, Charlotte Beauvais and Amelia Oliver also dropped at least 5 seconds in events.  Kyle Barclay, Lisa Deng, and Laney Williams dropped time in 4 events.    As a result of all this fast swimming, an amazing 17 athletes had 36 all-star times  -- up from 13 athletes with 28 all-star times last week.

The Foxes immediately starting breaking the new record board.  (Please don't

break the water fountain as it takes a long time to replace).  Andy Rothstein broke an 18-year-old record in the 50 Free.  Phoebe Bacon broke a slightly newer record in the 25 Fly, going under 18 for the 1st time. Brooke Barclay, Laney Williams, Rachel Caplan and Phoebe Bacon also rebroke their week-old record by a huge 2 seconds.

 Montgomery Square Meet

After the Black Out at the Manor, the Foxes went Neon to make sure that it would

DSC_8167.jpg

be bright enough to swim fly.  Abby Newburger was a little loud here too.  Many Foxes were also very bright including Sara, Sydney and Brett Feyerick, Gabby Pilarksi and Juliet Twomey.  The Fox Fashion Critic enjoyed the Neon Shirts made especially for the occasion.  The Foxes were clearly in a rush to get to the Fly.  Connor Farney and Sarah O'Brien dropped a Kit-like 17 and 12 seconds in the first event.  Later, Connor dropped 11 seconds in the back and "only" 9 seconds in the fly.  Big "Kit" Emma Glass and Adam Newburger also dropped more than 10 seconds in events.  A real Kit Annika Subrahmanian dropped 13 and 5 seconds in her events.    Speaking of Kits, the Kits got the Neon Foxes swept both the 6 &under (Dan Wei Zuo, Finn Bacon, Fletcher Bautz and Evan Price) and 7-year-old frees (Josh Wolfson, Josh Pilarski, Colin Redmond, Mason Goldstein and Daniel Fried).  A little bit bigger Chris Cochran swept his events.   Fortunately, there were lights when the Foxes got to the fly.   Under the lights, Dan Wei Zuo won the  1st fly event (6 &under!) and Evi Liu won the last.  In between the Foxes won 9 Fly events.

Mohican Meet

The  Foxes doubled their fun against Mohican.  The Foxes got off to a fast start when Andy Rothstein, Reid Bacon and Kyle Barclay swept the 1st event.  The

MM BL DW Swim A Meet June 25th 2011 072.jpg

Foxes had the slower seed time in both Medley Relays.  However,  Winston Liu, Brian Tsau, Andy Rosenthal, Alex Zhang and then Evi Liu, Lisa Deng, Olivia Parven and Katy Verboncoeur pulled off the upsets.  In the next event, the Foxes swept for the second time  in the 1st 3 individual events.  (Ben Long Zuo, Brett Feyerick and Cameron Barclay).  Ben Long Zuo would go on to sweep his events.  Josh Wolfson completed the sweep of the age group.   For the Twin Time, Brett Feyerick did a no-breath 25 in a race and earned his 1st All-Star time.   Phoebe Bacon won the next event and she also swept her events.  Sophie Whiteway completed the sweep.  It was Sophie's 1st blue ribbon on Saturday.  P Then, Brooke Barclay, Becky Wolfson Mei Mei Zuo and Indra Periwal went 1-4.  In total,

MM BL DW Swim A Meet June 25th 2011 045.jpg

the  Foxes wept a total of 7 events. In addition to Ben Long and Phoebe, Sophie Bacon, Andy Rothstein and Rachel Caplan also swept their age groups. Brooke Barclay and Reid Bacon completed their sweep of their age groups.   Because Mr. Newburger was the announcer, the Foxes got through the fly  before Christo needed to turn on the lights .  Therefore, everyone was able to see clearly the Foxes Fly Across the Pool.  Laney Williams dropped 4 seconds to win the 11-12 fly. Radhika Mukerji and Sarah O'Brien dropped 1 and 4 seconds to take 2nd and 4th.     Spurred on by a clanging cow bell and raucous cheering, the Foxes kept Flying through the Relays.    The Foxes won both final relays (Ian Rosenthal, Andy Rothstein, Alex Zhang, and Ben Long Zuo and Brooke Barclay, Laney Williams, Rachel Caplan and Phoebe Bacon).

In 2010, 25% of the Tallyho records were broken.  The Foxes continued their assault on the missing record board.  In the final event, Brooke Barclay, Laney Williams, Rachel Caplan and Phoebe Bacon broke the Pool and Team Record in the Free Relay.  It was the 1st time the Fox women have gone under 2 minutes.  A little earlier, Phoebe broke 5 individual records (the pool and team records in the free and fly and the pool record in the breast).  Big Sister Sophie broke a back record dating all the way back to 1974. Ben Long Zuo broke the Pool and Team Record in the Fly as well.

Wildwood Manor Meet

day morning, they returned to the Den.  And we joined the new (and still unnamed) league

because. . . In the brief time in between, the Foxes swam fast against the powerhouse Wombats.  Kyle Barclay, Laney Williams, Finn Bacon and Cameron Barclay won the first four events.   A couple of events later, Kyra Du, Mei Mei Zuo, Indra Periwal, Katie Rothstein and Sophie Apfel went 1-5 in the 9-10 50 Free.   The Foxes did their part to make the meet go fast.  For example, Solene Aubert, Sammy Daggett,  Liza Khovayko, Rami Najjar, Josh Pilarski and Dan Wei Zuo all dropped 10 or more seconds in an event since Time Trials (which wasn't that long ago at the beginning of the meet but a long time ago by the end of the meet).

Hallowell Meet

a Hurricane.  Andy Rothstein ripped off his cast to win the 1st event.  He went on to win all of his events.  Hospital roommate Brian Tsau threw down his crutches to win his 3 events. Avikar Periwal and Alex Zhang completed the sweep of the age group.  Together with Chris Cochran, the 13-14s outscored the Hurricanes by 34 points.  Kit Foxes, Ben Long Zuo and Phoebe Bacon, also swept their events.  Phoebe smashed team records in all three of her events.  The former records all belonged to the seven-year-old Phoebe.  Right now Phoebe is ranked first in the County in all of her events.  Ben Long Zuo is ranked first in

the fly and second in the free.  In total, 13 Foxes earned 25 All-Star Times.  The Foxes ended on a great note, going 1-2 to in the Boys Free Relay.  Ian Rosenthal, Andy Rothstein, Brian Tsau and Ben Long Zuo won.  Alex Smelson, Kyle Barclay and Alex Zhang battled a very fast Hurricane team.  Josh Wolfson dove in behind but caught the Hurricane to come in second by the slightest of margins.

Six Foxes represented Tallyho and themselves at the MCSL All-Star Meet.  The Foxes set four MM All Star Aug 1st 2010 021.jpgteam records.  They earned five plaques (for finishing in the top 3), one medal (for finishing in the top 6) and five ribbons (for for finishing in the top 16).  I can't remember that the last time the Foxes won so many plaques.

Anya Vinogradsky was chosen to sing the National Anthem.  Seeded 8th in the breast, Anya moved all the way up to second by dropping almost a half a second.  Like Divisionals, there are many that would say she actually won the race. Chris Verboncoeur and Phoebe Bacon officially won events. Chris won the butterfly in a best time, thus setting  a new team record.  He ended up just a couple of tenths off the County record.  He finished third in the IM with a season best time.  7-year-old Phoebe Bacon won the 8&under backstroke by almost a second.  She got  best times in both the back and the fly (two more team records).  She placed 4th in the fly.

Seeded 9th in the Breast, Kyle Barclay moved all the way to 3rd by dropping time.  In the process, he broke his team record in the breast.    He got a best time in fly and moved up from 14th to 8th. Lisa Deng came in 12th in the IM and 13th in the breast.  Mei Mei ZuoMM All Star Aug 1st 2010 153.jpg came in 10th and 13th in the free and the back. To be top 16 in the entire County is truly remarkable.  It takes talent and a year of hard work.  Tallyho is  proud of all six swimmers.

Four Tallyho relays swam on Saturday at All-Star Relays.  Both relays that included the same swimmers as the Lake Marion Relay Carnival dropped time. The Foxes have to swim in the considerably faster Section I and had to race against some very fast teams.MM All Star Aug 1st 2010 085.jpg
Chris Cochran, Samantha Danshes, Andy Rothstein and Connie Xu dropped time and moved up one place to finish 6th in the 11-12 200 Free Relay. Kyle Barclay, William Mishkin, Lawrence Redmond and Ian Rosenthal also finished 6th and held their seed in the 9-10 Medley. Rachel Caplan, Lisa Deng, Brian Tsau and Alexander Zhang also dropped time and held their seed and finished 7th in the 13-14 200 Free Relay. Assistant Coach Dayu Tsau teamed up with Kyle Barclay, Andy Rothstein, Josh Wolfson and Alex Zhang to finish 8th. Congratulations to all Foxes!  ----------

July 23, 2010 Division G Championships  Today the Foxes won Divisionals!!!!  They scored 938 points and Mohican scored 936.5MM BL Divisional Swim Meet July 14th 2010 076.jpg

In a meet, that was decided by a mere point and half, every single race mattered.  Each of the 37 Foxes who participated is responsible for the victory.  If anyone of them had not swum quite as fast, the Foxes would not have won.  As usual, the Foxes swam great at Divisionals.  Many Foxes moved up theirs seeds.  We had a lot of swimmers from the first heat who end up placing.  And of course every Fox scored.

938 points is remarkable.  Last year only four teams scored more points than that (and they are all in outlier divisions). the two A Division giants (Tilden Woods and Rockville), and two teams in M and N Division.  Between B and L, the most anyone scored last year was 907.  I think it is especially impressive to be able to score so many points when Mohican was also taking a lot of points.

MM BL Divisional Swim Meet July 14th 2010 218.jpgI hope it gives you an idea of how truly special the 2010 Foxes are.  They have great athletes in every age group.  It really began last September when so many Foxes started winter swimming.  Then once Tallyho practice started, even more Foxes put in the work.  And over the last week, the Foxes did some very intensive training.  And of course they stood up and raced hard today.  The Foxes were the fastest when they needed it the most.

I have a lot of respect for the Mohican swimmers.  If you just look at our team you would expect us to be able to beat any G Division team.  However, Mohican is every bit as strong as we are.  And in these last two meets, they came to race. They were getting best times all over the place.  I also hope you noticed their spirit (and Glenwood's).  We were lucky to the chance to race so many fast swimmers.  It made each of you better.

Today was Chris Verboncoeur's last meet.  He broke three team records:  (back --59.37), breast (1:08.36) and fly (25.96).  He broke his own record in the back and fly and broke a 20-year-old record in the Breast.  Each of those times is unbelievably fast.  Any one of those performances alone would be outstanding.  The MM BL Divisional Swim Meet July 14th 2010 644.jpgcombination is remarkable.  In each stroke, he went up against one of the fastest swimmers in the area in that swimmer's best stroke and came out on top (sort of).  He now owns the team record in each individual stroke and the IM.  No one does that.

A bit younger, Kyle Barclay set a team record in the breast (19.82) which (not too surprisingly) belonged to Chris). MM BL Divisional Swim Meet July 14th 2010 728.jpg Our boys free relay also set a new team record.  Kyle Barclay, Andy Rothstein, Alex Zhang and Ben Long Zuo (which belonged to a very outstanding team of Chris, Greg, David Iselin and Daniel Salcetti -- four very fast swimmers).  Andy, Alex and Ben Long are all at the bottom of the age group.  So if you will be  9-10 next year you have the opportunity to be on a very fast relay if you swim all winter.

July 18, 2010 Potomac Invitational Relay Carnival

Desperately TH 2010-07-18 PIRC Aloha.JPGneeding a vacation, the hard working Foxes took the Dan-Katz Airlines to Hawaii -- much drier than Nantucket.  Hawaii (aka the Den) looked like Paradise except for the lifeguard stand, which apparently was a casualty of a volcano. (At least there was no earthquake). None of the Foxes will actually end up being lifeguards because they are very hard of hearing. Fortunately, they are very loud so they can hear each other even if they can't hear any Sea Monster.  While it is not safe to swim without guards, at least the Foxes are very good swimmers. Indeed the Foxes won 12 out of 26 relays. 38 Foxes were on winning relays. Marcus Antolli, Cameron Barclay, Charlotte Beauvais, Janie Cai, Lexi Cochran, Michelle Dan, Nealie Deol, Lelia Durand, Chris Ervin, Kelly Ervin, Melissa Ervin, Brett Feyerick, Julia Fox-Rabinovich, Joseph Gardemal, Jenna Kupferschmid, Sydney Levine, David Mishkin, William Mishkin, Eric Mollard, Sarah O'Brien, Lia Papageorge, Indra Periwal, Gaby PIlarski, Ceci Price , Jackson Resnick, Eric Rosenthal, Ian Rosenthal, Shoshana Rosenthal, Katie Rothstein, Nick Shawley, James Strand, Nathan  Subrahmanian, Juliet Twomey, Ben Williams, Laney Williams and Ben Long Zuo.

July 17, 2010 A Meet Tallyho at Mohican  The Foxes are improving in every way. Last year, they could only spell T. This year, they spelled out the entire T-al-l-y-h-o.  TH 2010-07-17 T-A-L-L-Y-H-O.JPGFor the 10th dual meet of the season, a Fox (Chris ("I'll pick swimming over football") Cochran) won the first event.  In the second event, five minutes later, Connie ("Cannonball") Xu won by dropping over a second. Twenty minutes later, Ben ("Long") Zuo, Josh ("I'll break Chris's records") Wolfson and Brett ("No Breath") Feyerick dropped time to score even more unexpected points for the Foxes. In all, 10 out of 12 Kits dropped time in the Free, starting the Foxes on a roll of best times. Perhaps, they were just hoping to get out of Mohican by Sunday.

Phoebe Bacon and Katie Rothstein got under 18 and 20 for the first time. Sydney Feyerick and Ben Long Zuo had all best times.  Everybody got into the act.  With Chris Verboncoeur, Winston Liu and Andy Rosenthal off at Senior Champs, the Foxes were very fortunate to have Brian Boman, Dayu and Conway Xu back at Mohican.  Conway lead the team with a Kit-Like 12 second drop in the IM Dayu had three best times to score many unexpected points. Laney Williams and Gaby Pilarski picked up events for the ailing Samantha Danshes. In the 11-12 breast, these girls teamed up with Sydney Feyerick to drop a combined 8 seconds.

Three events and 25 minutes later, Fox Fans were reminded of the 2004 Seven Locks Meet when a young David Iselin returned from Senior Champs. This time it was Chris Verboncoeur who came back to help the Foxes.  The Foxes all thanked the Mohican Announcer. Swimming his final race in a dual meet for the second time, Chris of course won. Chris's unexpected arrival spurred on the Foxes to great swimming in the fly. Eventually, the meet got to the final  individual event (slightly before Finn's bedtime) where the Women (Olivia Parven, Katy Verboncoeur and Amelia ("I'm bound for South Africa") Oliver) went 2,3,4 to outscore Mohican. Five minutes later, the boys free relay of Kyle Barclay, Andy Rothstein, Alex Zhang and Ben Long Zuo held off a very strong Mohican team. Kyle Barclay was the only Fox to sweep his events against Mohican.

July 14, 2010 Last B Meet of the Season, at Old Farm  While veterans expect to hear thunder at an Old Farm meet, the Churchill Hackers left nothing to chance and cut off power to the pool. Surprisingly, PEPCO was as fast as a Fox and got the power up in time. (Where was PEPCO in February?). In the end, there was electricity in the pump room but not in the sky. And the Foxes got to prove once again that they are faster than PEPCO (normally not impressive). Reid Bacon and Twirler Barclay went 1-2 in the 1st event once again. With two best times, Reid swept his events. Ian Rosenthal also swept his events. Olivia Palmer dropped over 11 seconds in 2 events to sweep hers. James Strand and Matthew Visnich each dropped 11 seconds in a single event. Maggie Hillman, Bettina Papageorge, Gaby Pilaski, Josh Pilarski, Shoshana Rosenthal, and Nick Sieg also dropped a lot of time in events.  The Foxes are so fast that they celebrated Halloween in July. This time the witches brought out the broom an impressive 13 times. Clearly the Foxes won many events. In addition to Reid, Ian and Olivia, Brooke Barclay, Brett Feyerick, Cate McCaffery, Malinda Messner, Olivia Palmer, Avikar Periwal, Shoshana Rosenthal, Cyrus Safiran and Kerry Scott were multiple event winners.

July 12, 2010 Coaches' Invitational Long Course   An impressive 5 Foxes were invited to  compete, the most since 2002.  Phoebe Bacon (swimming in her first) and Chris Verboncoeur (swimming in his last) both finished second.  Kyle Barclay, Lisa Deng and Anya Vinogradsky also are top 8 in the County.

July 10, 2010 A Meet against Lake Marion  Raincoats are the latest fashion in Nantucket.  Everyone assumes that Mrs. Bacon was well dressed under hers.  Reminiscent of the 2001 Deluge Bowl with Little Falls, Chris . . . was absent (surprising no one).

Fox Fans were also not surprised that Foxes won the first event for the 8th meet in a row (Andy Rothstein).  Connie Xu and the Men's Relay (Chris Verboncoeur, Winston Liu, Andy  Rosenthal, Dayu Tsau) won the next two. With a little foreshadowing, the men tried a new order moving Chris to back. Once again, the Foxes took out the broom (ok squeegee) frequently. The 13-14s swept both freestyles (Brian Tsau, Alex Zhang, and Avikar Periwal and Rachel  Caplan, Lisa Deng and Evi Liu). Three events later, the Men also swept the free starting a roll where the Foxes swept four out of six events, ending with the Kits sweeping both backs. Shortly thereafter, the Men returned to swim back.  It was Dayu's lastswim at the Den. With the entire skulk cheering on theirfavorite coach, Dayu dropped 2 seconds. In the same race, the versatile Chris Verboncoeur swam back for the first time. In beating yet another superstar, Chris broke team and pool records in the back. Later in the meet, Foxes also cheered on Chris in his final swim in the Den in the 50 fly.

At half time, the Foxes recognized high school graduates Molly Kiniry, Chris Verboncoeur, and Conway Xu. Fox Fans were pleased to see Molly out of the hospital. The Foxes will never be able to replace Dayu and Chris.

They do have a lot of young talent. The Kits swept 5 out  of 8 races. Phoebe Bacon swept her events and by the way set 3 team records. Fox Historians don't recall anyone setting team records in every event in a dual meet. (Mei Mei Zuo completed the sweep.)  And it not just the Kits. At 9-10, Kyle Barclay swept his events and Lawrence Redmond completed the sweep. In the very deep 9-10 girls, three different girls won events- Sophie Bacon, Anya Vinogradsky and Brooke Barclay. The meet ended like it started. The Foxes swept both Free  relays (Kyle Barclay, Andy Rothstein, Brian Tsau, Josh Wolfson,  Larwence Redmond, Chris Cochran, Alex Zhang, Ales Smerlson, Anya Vinogradsky, Connie Xu, Rachel Caplan, Phoebe Bacon, Sarah O'Brien, Samantha Danshes, Evi Liu, Mei Mei Zuo). With Will Mishkin and Lexi Cochran on the DL, many Foxes stepped up. Ben Williams decided Nantucket was better than the Jersey shore. Brooke Barclay, Charlotte  Beauvais, Hannah Cox and Ian Rosenthal all picked up events. Juliet Twomey swam up.

July 7, 2010 B Meet at Eldwick  At the meet against the Eldwick Sharks, however, they did get to hear Anya sing even though the meet was at the Cove. Despite the tropical jet stream at the Cove, the Foxes were as beautiful in the water as Anya's singing. Apparently Ninjas frighten Sharks or are at least faster than Sharks. For the 7th meet in a row, the  Foxes won the first event. Reid (who used to be the Biggest Bacon) Bacon won  the IM (which actually includes Freestyle).

Not wanting to get eaten by any  Sharks, the Foxes went on to get to the wall first in the next 4 events and 12 out of the  first 13 events. Reid won all three of his events (including free). David Mishkin won  is 3 events as well. Brooke Barclay, Malinda Messner, Radhika Mukerji, Sarah  O'Brien, Josh Pilarksi, Ian Rosenthal, Shoshanna Rosenthal, Cyrus Safiran and Molly Silverberg won multiple events. Another multiple event winner, Amelia Oliver, might  have been motivated by something other than sharks. Whatever the reason, Nick Sieg dropped 12 seconds in the free.

Bettina Papageorge and Ben Long Zuo kept away from Sharks by dropping 8 and 7 seconds. McKay Messner, Ian Rosenthal, James Strand, Allison Jacobs, Palma Price, Gaby Pilarski also dropped a lot of time. Shoshana Rosenthal's prize for 3 best times and 3 firsts was a trip to Nantucket (umbrella not included). With all best times, Ellen Newbold also won a trip. She didn't mind the weather in Nantucket. Sadly a shark got Molly Kiniry's gall bladder and appendix. Meanwhile, the creative Dayu is constantly inventing new ways to spell Ta-l-l-y-h-o.

July 3, 2010 A Meet Tallyho at GlenwoodDSC_0018.NEF.jpg

Sporting their Red-White-And-Blue tie-dyed shirts and patriotic hats, the Foxes thankfully looked much better at the Lair than at the Nest.  However they dress, Foxes look beautiful in the water.   Indeed, the Foxes won both Opening Relays  (Winston Liu, Andy Rosenthal, Chris Verboncoeur and Dayu Tsau for the Men and Olivia Parven, Lisa Deng, Amelia Oliver and Katy Verboncoeur for the women).  DSC_0021.NEF.jpg

The relay kicked off a great meet for the Foxes' Poster-Making Women.  With four best times, Olivia Parven swept her events.  Katy Verboncoeur won the fifth Women's event and had three best times. All told, the Women (Olivia, Katy, Emma Glass, Cate McCaffery and Amelia Oliver) dropped significant time in 13 events including Emma dropping 9 seconds in the free.  Lisa Deng got 4 best times and 4 all-stars times. We would mention that she broke her team record again but that is hardly news anymore.   Other girls with best times include Michelle Dan,  Emma Glass, Jenna Kupferschmid, and Radhika Murerji.

Chris Cochran, Andy Rothstein, and Reid Bacon unexpectedly swept the boys IM at the beginning of the meet.  Foxes got the broom out again to sweep both the 9-10 and 11-12 boys fly. DSC_0024.NEF.jpg (Kyle Barclay, Lawrence Redmond and William Mishkin and Reid Bacon, Chris Cochran and Andy Rothstein ).   Brett Feyerick, Winston Liu, David Mishkin, Lawrence Redmond, Ian Rosenthal, Nick Shawley, Jonathan Wilson and Conway Xu also had all best times.  Brett Feyerick dropped 2 seconds in the free by being the first Fox ever to swim his first "25, no breath" in a meet.  Chris Verboncoeur dropped 3 seconds in the breast and almost caught the very fast Tiger.  He would have caught pretty much anyone else as he is now ranked 4th in the entire County.

The meet ended with the Foxes winning both relays (Kyle Barclay, Andy Rothstein, Alex Zhang and Alex Smelson and Anya Vinogradsky, Connie Xu, Evi Liu, and Phoebe Bacon). Thus the Foxes were 4 for 4 in the relays.

June 30, 2010 B Meet Tallyho v Inverness

The dreaded Sea Monsters traveled all the way from Scotland to the Den -- and it took them only 5 minutes to get here.  Even without Bagpipes or Vuzuzelas, the Den was noisy as the archrivals engaged in raucous cheering.  Reid Bacon and Kyle Barclay silenced the Nessie Fans by winning the first event for the fifth meet in a row. Still on a cleanliness kick, Anya Vinogradksy, Laney Williams, and Radhika Mukerji brought out the broom for the next event. Singing the National Anthem beautifully apparently didn't wear out Anya.

The Foxes went on to sweep 15 individual races and the girls' free relay. Finally someone dared to face the speedy Fox Relays. The Foxes clearly worked on something other than birthday parties. Scottie Pippen Post dropped 9 seconds in the free -- creating buzz for LeBronesque free agency excitement in 2018.  A slightly older Emma Glass dropped a combined 20 seconds in 3 events.  In honor of Michael Phelp's birthday, Anna Mollard dropped 9 seconds in the fly.  Brett Feyerick, Maryam Garavi, Paulina Leder, Sydney Levine, Ellen Newbold, Jeremy Oblon, Carina Rosenbaum, Eli Schiff, Nick Sieg, Alex Sklar, Rebecca Stolz, Ross Tannenbaum, Matthew Visnich and Dan Wei Zuo also dropped a lot of time in events. David Mishkin dropped 3 seconds in Michael's stroke on his way to sweeping his events. Radhika Mukerji won 4 events, including Michael's stroke.

Multiple events winners included: Reid Bacon, Brooke Barclay, Sammy Daggett, Eric Rosenthal, Shoshana Rosenthal, Andy Rothstein, Katie Rothstein, Molly Silverberg, Anya Vinogradksy and Dayu Tsau.  Dayu was having so fun much that he decided to jump into the 9-10 free. It was hard to stop the speedy Greg Newbold who proved why English Rugby players are tougher than those padded American football players. Dayu is now with Chris on Craig's List looking for a dry wallet, keys and cell phone.  Linguists hope that his dictionary is dry so he can practice spelling Tallyho.

June 26, 2010 A Meet Tallyho at TanterraDSCN0824 Twins.JPG

The Foxes tried to double their fun by cloning each Fox in the second (what else?) annual Twin Day.  The 15-18s were thrilled to make twice as many posters, this week honoring the cloned 11-12s.  The Foxes got on a roll by winning the first event.  Outside smoke Chris Cochran dropped 2 seconds to win the IM.  In fact, the Foxes won the first five individual events and ten out of the first eleven events of the meet.  The Foxes continued their cleanliness kick by sweeping up the Tarpon Ocean (maybe we should send them to help with the oil spill in the Gulf).  Twins Phoebe Bacon and Mei Mei Zuo, Kyle Barclay and Lawrence Redmond, Rachel Caplan and Lisa Deng combined to sweep all the events in their age groups.  Impressively, triplets Avikar Periwal, Brian Tsau, and Alex Zhang each won an event.  Although Tanterra found a big tarpon almost as fast as Chris Verboncoeur in the free, Chris fought him off to sweep his events once again.  Fox triplets took out the broom for eight sweeps during the meet.  Without vuvuzelas or bagpipes, the Foxes still managed to make a lot of noise with a cow bell.  On the last relay, Mei Mei Zuo (with Brooke Barclay, Radhika Mukerji and Evi Liu) reeled in a Tarpon so that our Girls Twin Relays could go 1-2.  As soon as Mei Mei touched, the Foxes dashed to Cal Tort to outtouch the Hallowell Hurricanes for our last sweep of the morning.

 June21, 2010 B Meet Tallyho at Montgomery SquareDSC_5673 Neon Hat.JPG

On Wednesday, the Foxes were lights out at Montgomery Square. Even in the darkness, however, Sydney Feyerick and many other neon Foxes were visible.  In "light" of the Foxes' lack of fashion sense, it was ok that you couldn't see them.  Even if you couldn't see the Foxes, you certainly could hear them (no guard super hearing powers needed) - thanks to the Twomey Vuvuzelas.  All the parents must love Mrs. Twomey.

The parents did love all the cleaning the Foxes did.  The Foxes left the Seahawk Nest virtually spotless.  The Foxes swept their first 4 events on their way to 17 sweeps.  The Foxes won all twelve 12 & under free events and swept most. For example, future big kids Josh Pilarski, Finn Bacon, Dan Wei Zuo and Scott Post dropped a combined 30 seconds in the free to go 1-4 in the 6&under free.  Josh dropped 12 seconds to win. You would think that Josh would have been happy with that. But no, he had to go on and drop another 39 seconds in the back. Finn Bacon, Maggie Hillman, Augusto Iglesias, Nick Sieg, Stefan Tesliuc also dropped more than 10 seconds in events. Reid Bacon, Chris Cochran, Lexi Cochran, Octavio Iglesias, Molly Kiniry, Michael Palmer, Josh Pilarski, Niko Papageorge, Alex Sklar, Alex Smelson, Stefan Tesliuc, Becky Wolfson, and Mei Mei Zuo got all best times. All these best times translated into winning 44 races.DSCN0784 Neon Clash.JPG

Reid Bacon, Chris Cochran, Radhika Mukerji, Amelia Oliver, Olivia Palmer, Lia Papageorge, Ian (Stealth) Rosenthal, Molly Silverberg, and Becky Wolfson were all double event winners.  The Foxes were especially excited with these wins because many got double ribbons -- obviously getting ready for Twin Day. With great swimming, Caroline Beuavais, Brett Feyerick, Augusto Iglesias, Octavio Iglesias, Lia Papageorge, Josefina Scriven, Nick Shawley and Juliet Twomey all won trips to Olney. Thanks to wonderful weather, the meet didn't last as long as the 2008 MS Marathon or the Isner-Mahoot tennis match.

June 19, 2010 A Meet Tallyho v Woodcliffe

As promised, Woodcliffe proved to be exceptionally fast.  It took an incredible effort by the Foxes to pull out a victory.   Almost everyone got all best times and as a result swimmers moved up their seeds to get extra points.  For example, we won one event in which we supposed to get swept. For some reason Chris Verboncoeur never moved up his seed).   I do want to thank Kerry, Samantha and our Navy Seals for making personal sacrifices to be at the meet.   I am so proud of the way everyone raced.  It was great.Thumbs Up for Tallyho.JPG

And of course we broke a great number of records.  Lisa Deng broke a 30 year old team record in the  13-14 breast.  7-year-old Phoebe Bacon broke the 8&under team record in the fly.  And a much older Chris Verboncoeur broke his own pool record in the fly as well as Justin Ward's pool record in the IM.  Our girls free relay also broke the team record (Anya Vinogradsky, Connie Xu, Rachel Caplan and Phoebe Bacon).  Check the Tallyho Times for more information.

I am constantly amazed by the generosity of our parents.  From setting up Team Unify all winter, to the Spaghetti Dinners, Concessions at the meets, organizing our Bowling Trip,  working at the meets and please never forget the unseen computer operations and more and more.  I can't believe how much time the parents put into this team.  Why do you do it?  But I know it helps make it a wonderful experience for the athletes and it is critical to the recent growth and development of our swim team.  Swimmers join and stick with swimming because our parents put on a great show.

Congrats!  -Coach Richard

June 12, 2010 Time Trials:  That was perhaps the best Times Trial the Foxes have ever had.  There wasa huge number of swimmers.  The more Foxes, the more fun we all will have.   Our youngest Foxes did a great job of handling all the newness, uncertainties and confusion.  They looked like pros.  The returning Foxes looked fast.  Many clearly swam in the winter and the hard work paiRibbons.JPGd off.  Thanks to all the parents who worked the meet to make is quick and efficient.

The fun is just beginning.   We have a very busy week coming up with morning practices, our first B Meet, a bowling outing, the first spaghetti dinner, the 7th Annual Tallyho Free-Throw Contest, and the first A Meet.
