tallyho_FOX.pngTallyho Foxes:  Welcome to the best swim team in Montgomery County!  The Tallyho Foxes have lots of fun and swim fast.  If you would like to swim, make new friends, eat delicious spaghetti dinners, and have a great time, please join the team.  Visit our website at www.tallyhoclub.org to see more about the club, swim team, and pre-team program.

July 23, 2010 Division G Championships  Today the Foxes won Divisionals!!!!  They scored 938 points and Mohican scored 936.5MM BL Divisional Swim Meet July 14th 2010 076.jpg

In a meet, that was decided by a mere point and half, every single race mattered.  Each of the 37 Foxes who participated is responsible for the victory.  If anyone of them had not swum quite as fast, the Foxes would not have won.  As usual, the Foxes swam great at Divisionals.  Many Foxes moved up theirs seeds.  We had a lot of swimmers from the first heat who end up placing.  And of course every Fox scored.

938 points is remarkable.  Last year only four teams scored more points than that (and they are all in outlier divisions). the two A Division giants (Tilden Woods and Rockville), and two teams in M and N Division.  Between B and L, the most anyone scored last year was 907.  I think it is especially impressive to be able to score so many points when Mohican was also taking a lot of points.

MM BL Divisional Swim Meet July 14th 2010 218.jpgI hope it gives you an idea of how truly special the 2010 Foxes are.  They have great athletes in every age group.  It really began last September when so many Foxes started winter swimming.  Then once Tallyho practice started, even more Foxes put in the work.  And over the last week, the Foxes did some very intensive training.  And of course they stood up and raced hard today.  The Foxes were the fastest when they needed it the most.

I have a lot of respect for the Mohican swimmers.  If you just look at our team you would expect us to be able to beat any G Division team.  However, Mohican is every bit as strong as we are.  And in these last two meets, they came to race. They were getting best times all over the place.  I also hope you noticed their spirit (and Glenwood's).  We were lucky to the chance to race so many fast swimmers.  It made each of you better.

Today was Chris Verboncoeur's last meet.  He broke three team records:  (back --59.37), breast (1:08.36) and fly (25.96).  He broke his own record in the back and fly and broke a 20-year-old record in the Breast.  Each of those times is unbelievably fast.  Any one of those performances alone would be outstanding.  The MM BL Divisional Swim Meet July 14th 2010 644.jpgcombination is remarkable.  In each stroke, he went up against one of the fastest swimmers in the area in that swimmer's best stroke and came out on top (sort of).  He now owns the team record in each individual stroke and the IM.  No one does that.

A bit younger, Kyle Barclay set a team record in the breast (19.82) which (not too surprisingly) belonged to Chris). MM BL Divisional Swim Meet July 14th 2010 728.jpg Our boys free relay also set a new team record.  Kyle Barclay, Andy Rothstein, Alex Zhang and Ben Long Zuo (which belonged to a very outstanding team of Chris, Greg, David Iselin and Daniel Salcetti -- four very fast swimmers).  Andy, Alex and Ben Long are all at the bottom of the age group.  So if you will be  9-10 next year you have the opportunity to be on a very fast relay if you swim all winter.

July 18, 2010 Potomac Invitational Relay Carnival  Desperately TH 2010-07-18 PIRC Aloha.JPGneeding a vacation, the hard working Foxes took the Dan-Katz Airlines to Hawaii -- much drier than Nantucket.  Hawaii (aka the Den) looked like Paradise except for the lifeguard stand, which apparently was a casualty of a volcano. (At least there was no earthquake). None of the Foxes will actually end up being lifeguards because they are very hard of hearing. Fortunately, they are very loud so they can hear each other even if they can't hear any Sea Monster.  While it is not safe to swim without guards, at least the Foxes are very good swimmers. Indeed the Foxes won 12 out of 26 relays. 38 Foxes were on winning relays. Marcus Antolli, Cameron Barclay, Charlotte Beauvais, Janie Cai, Lexi Cochran, Michelle Dan, Nealie Deol, Lelia Durand, Chris Ervin, Kelly Ervin, Melissa Ervin, Brett Feyerick, Julia Fox-Rabinovich, Joseph Gardemal, Jenna Kupferschmid, Sydney Levine, David Mishkin, William Mishkin, Eric Mollard, Sarah O'Brien, Lia Papageorge, Indra Periwal, Gaby PIlarski, Ceci Price , Jackson Resnick, Eric Rosenthal, Ian Rosenthal, Shoshana Rosenthal, Katie Rothstein, Nick Shawley, James Strand, Nathan  Subrahmanian, Juliet Twomey, Ben Williams, Laney Williams and Ben Long Zuo.

July 17, 2010 A Meet Tallyho at Mohican  The Foxes are improving in every way. Last year, they could only spell T. This year, they spelled out the entire T-al-l-y-h-o.  TH 2010-07-17 T-A-L-L-Y-H-O.JPGFor the 10th dual meet of the season, a Fox (Chris ("I'll pick swimming over football") Cochran) won the first event.  In the second event, five minutes later, Connie ("Cannonball") Xu won by dropping over a second. Twenty minutes later, Ben ("Long") Zuo, Josh ("I'll break Chris's records") Wolfson and Brett ("No Breath") Feyerick dropped time to score even more unexpected points for the Foxes. In all, 10 out of 12 Kits dropped time in the Free, starting the Foxes on a roll of best times. Perhaps, they were just hoping to get out of Mohican by Sunday.

Phoebe Bacon and Katie Rothstein got under 18 and 20 for the first time. Sydney Feyerick and Ben Long Zuo had all best times.  Everybody got into the act.  With Chris Verboncoeur, Winston Liu and Andy Rosenthal off at Senior Champs, the Foxes were very fortunate to have Brian Boman, Dayu and Conway Xu back at Mohican.  Conway lead the team with a Kit-Like 12 second drop in the IM Dayu had three best times to score many unexpected points. Laney Williams and Gaby Pilarski picked up events for the ailing Samantha Danshes. In the 11-12 breast, these girls teamed up with Sydney Feyerick to drop a combined 8 seconds.

Three events and 25 minutes later, Fox Fans were reminded of the 2004 Seven Locks Meet when a young David Iselin returned from Senior Champs. This time it was Chris Verboncoeur who came back to help the Foxes.  The Foxes all thanked the Mohican Announcer. Swimming his final race in a dual meet for the second time, Chris of course won. Chris's unexpected arrival spurred on the Foxes to great swimming in the fly. Eventually, the meet got to the final  individual event (slightly before Finn's bedtime) where the Women (Olivia Parven, Katy Verboncoeur and Amelia ("I'm bound for South Africa") Oliver) went 2,3,4 to outscore Mohican. Five minutes later, the boys free relay of Kyle Barclay, Andy Rothstein, Alex Zhang and Ben Long Zuo held off a very strong Mohican team. Kyle Barclay was the only Fox to sweep his events against Mohican.

July 14, 2010 Last B Meet of the Season, at Old Farm  While veterans expect to hear thunder at an Old Farm meet, the Churchill Hackers left nothing to chance and cut off power to the pool. Surprisingly, PEPCO was as fast as a Fox and got the power up in time. (Where was PEPCO in February?). In the end, there was electricity in the pump room but not in the sky. And the Foxes got to prove once again that they are faster than PEPCO (normally not impressive). Reid Bacon and Twirler Barclay went 1-2 in the 1st event once again. With two best times, Reid swept his events. Ian Rosenthal also swept his events. Olivia Palmer dropped over 11 seconds in 2 events to sweep hers. James Strand and Matthew Visnich each dropped 11 seconds in a single event. Maggie Hillman, Bettina Papageorge, Gaby Pilaski, Josh Pilarski, Shoshana Rosenthal, and Nick Sieg also dropped a lot of time in events.  The Foxes are so fast that they celebrated Halloween in July. This time the witches brought out the broom an impressive 13 times. Clearly the Foxes won many events. In addition to Reid, Ian and Olivia, Brooke Barclay, Brett Feyerick, Cate McCaffery, Malinda Messner, Olivia Palmer, Avikar Periwal, Shoshana Rosenthal, Cyrus Safiran and Kerry Scott were multiple event winners.

July 12, 2010 Coaches' Invitational Long Course   An impressive 5 Foxes were invited to  compete, the most since 2002.  Phoebe Bacon (swimming in her first) and Chris Verboncoeur (swimming in his last) both finished second.  Kyle Barclay, Lisa Deng and Anya Vinogradsky also are top 8 in the County.

July 10, 2010 A Meet against Lake Marion  Raincoats are the latest fashion in Nantucket.  Everyone assumes that Mrs. Bacon was well dressed under hers.  Reminiscent of the 2001 Deluge Bowl with Little Falls, Chris . . . was absent (surprising no one).

Fox Fans were also not surprised that Foxes won the first event for the 8th meet in a row (Andy Rothstein).  Connie Xu and the Men's Relay (Chris Verboncoeur, Winston Liu, Andy  Rosenthal, Dayu Tsau) won the next two. With a little foreshadowing, the men tried a new order moving Chris to back. Once again, the Foxes took out the broom (ok squeegee) frequently. The 13-14s swept both freestyles (Brian Tsau, Alex Zhang, and Avikar Periwal and Rachel  Caplan, Lisa Deng and Evi Liu). Three events later, the Men also swept the free starting a roll where the Foxes swept four out of six events, ending with the Kits sweeping both backs. Shortly thereafter, the Men returned to swim back.  It was Dayu's lastswim at the Den. With the entire skulk cheering on theirfavorite coach, Dayu dropped 2 seconds. In the same race, the versatile Chris Verboncoeur swam back for the first time. In beating yet another superstar, Chris broke team and pool records in the back. Later in the meet, Foxes also cheered on Chris in his final swim in the Den in the 50 fly.

At half time, the Foxes recognized high school graduates Molly Kiniry, Chris Verboncoeur, and Conway Xu. Fox Fans were pleased to see Molly out of the hospital. The Foxes will never be able to replace Dayu and Chris.

They do have a lot of young talent. The Kits swept 5 out  of 8 races. Phoebe Bacon swept her events and by the way set 3 team records. Fox Historians don't recall anyone setting team records in every event in a dual meet. (Mei Mei Zuo completed the sweep.)  And it not just the Kits. At 9-10, Kyle Barclay swept his events and Lawrence Redmond completed the sweep. In the very deep 9-10 girls, three different girls won events- Sophie Bacon, Anya Vinogradsky and Brooke Barclay. The meet ended like it started. The Foxes swept both Free  relays (Kyle Barclay, Andy Rothstein, Brian Tsau, Josh Wolfson,  Larwence Redmond, Chris Cochran, Alex Zhang, Ales Smerlson, Anya Vinogradsky, Connie Xu, Rachel Caplan, Phoebe Bacon, Sarah O'Brien, Samantha Danshes, Evi Liu, Mei Mei Zuo). With Will Mishkin and Lexi Cochran on the DL, many Foxes stepped up. Ben Williams decided Nantucket was better than the Jersey shore. Brooke Barclay, Charlotte  Beauvais, Hannah Cox and Ian Rosenthal all picked up events. Juliet Twomey swam up.

July 7, 2010 B Meet at Eldwick  At the meet against the Eldwick Sharks, however, they did get to hear Anya sing even though the meet was at the Cove. Despite the tropical jet stream at the Cove, the Foxes were as beautiful in the water as Anya's singing. Apparently Ninjas frighten Sharks or are at least faster than Sharks. For the 7th meet in a row, the  Foxes won the first event. Reid (who used to be the Biggest Bacon) Bacon won  the IM (which actually includes Freestyle).

Not wanting to get eaten by any  Sharks, the Foxes went on to get to the wall first in the next 4 events and 12 out of the  first 13 events. Reid won all three of his events (including free). David Mishkin won  is 3 events as well. Brooke Barclay, Malinda Messner, Radhika Mukerji, Sarah  O'Brien, Josh Pilarksi, Ian Rosenthal, Shoshanna Rosenthal, Cyrus Safiran and Molly Silverberg won multiple events. Another multiple event winner, Amelia Oliver, might  have been motivated by something other than sharks. Whatever the reason, Nick Sieg dropped 12 seconds in the free.

Bettina Papageorge and Ben Long Zuo kept away from Sharks by dropping 8 and 7 seconds. McKay Messner, Ian Rosenthal, James Strand, Allison Jacobs, Palma Price, Gaby Pilarski also dropped a lot of time. Shoshana Rosenthal's prize for 3 best times and 3 firsts was a trip to Nantucket (umbrella not included). With all best times, Ellen Newbold also won a trip. She didn't mind the weather in Nantucket. Sadly a shark got Molly Kiniry's gall bladder and appendix. Meanwhile, the creative Dayu is constantly inventing new ways to spell Ta-l-l-y-h-o.

July 3, 2010 A Meet Tallyho at GlenwoodDSC_0018.NEF.jpg

Sporting their Red-White-And-Blue tie-dyed shirts and patriotic hats, the Foxes thankfully looked much better at the Lair than at the Nest.  However they dress, Foxes look beautiful in the water.   Indeed, the Foxes won both Opening Relays  (Winston Liu, Andy Rosenthal, Chris Verboncoeur and Dayu Tsau for the Men and Olivia Parven, Lisa Deng, Amelia Oliver and Katy Verboncoeur for the women).  DSC_0021.NEF.jpg

The relay kicked off a great meet for the Foxes' Poster-Making Women.  With four best times, Olivia Parven swept her events.  Katy Verboncoeur won the fifth Women's event and had three best times. All told, the Women (Olivia, Katy, Emma Glass, Cate McCaffery and Amelia Oliver) dropped significant time in 13 events including Emma dropping 9 seconds in the free.  Lisa Deng got 4 best times and 4 all-stars times. We would mention that she broke her team record again but that is hardly news anymore.   Other girls with best times include Michelle Dan,  Emma Glass, Jenna Kupferschmid, and Radhika Murerji.

Chris Cochran, Andy Rothstein, and Reid Bacon unexpectedly swept the boys IM at the beginning of the meet.  Foxes got the broom out again to sweep both the 9-10 and 11-12 boys fly. DSC_0024.NEF.jpg (Kyle Barclay, Lawrence Redmond and William Mishkin and Reid Bacon, Chris Cochran and Andy Rothstein ).   Brett Feyerick, Winston Liu, David Mishkin, Lawrence Redmond, Ian Rosenthal, Nick Shawley, Jonathan Wilson and Conway Xu also had all best times.  Brett Feyerick dropped 2 seconds in the free by being the first Fox ever to swim his first "25, no breath" in a meet.  Chris Verboncoeur dropped 3 seconds in the breast and almost caught the very fast Tiger.  He would have caught pretty much anyone else as he is now ranked 4th in the entire County.

The meet ended with the Foxes winning both relays (Kyle Barclay, Andy Rothstein, Alex Zhang and Alex Smelson and Anya Vinogradsky, Connie Xu, Evi Liu, and Phoebe Bacon). Thus the Foxes were 4 for 4 in the relays.

June 30, 2010 B Meet Tallyho v Inverness

The dreaded Sea Monsters traveled all the way from Scotland to the Den -- and it took them only 5 minutes to get here.  Even without Bagpipes or Vuzuzelas, the Den was noisy as the archrivals engaged in raucous cheering.  Reid Bacon and Kyle Barclay
silenced the Nessie Fans by winning the first event for the fifth meet in a row. Still on a
cleanliness kick, Anya Vinogradksy, Laney Williams, and Radhika Mukerji brought out the broom for the next event. Singing the National Anthem beautifully apparently didn't wear out Anya.

The Foxes went on to sweep 15 individual races and the girls' free relay. Finally someone dared to face the speedy Fox Relays. The Foxes clearly worked on something other than birthday parties. Scottie Pippen Post dropped 9 seconds in the free -- creating buzz for LeBronesque free agency excitement in 2018.  A slightly older Emma Glass dropped a combined 20 seconds in 3 events.  In honor of Michael Phelp's birthday, Anna Mollard dropped 9 seconds in the fly.  Brett Feyerick, Maryam Garavi, Paulina Leder, Sydney Levine, Ellen Newbold, Jeremy Oblon, Carina Rosenbaum, Eli Schiff, Nick Sieg, Alex Sklar, Rebecca Stolz, Ross Tannenbaum, Matthew Visnich and Dan Wei Zuo also dropped a lot of time in events. David Mishkin dropped 3 seconds in Michael's stroke on his way to sweeping his events. Radhika Mukerji won 4 events, including Michael's stroke.

Multiple events winners included: Reid Bacon, Brooke Barclay, Sammy
Daggett, Eric Rosenthal, Shoshana Rosenthal, Andy Rothstein, Katie Rothstein, Molly Silverberg, Anya Vinogradksy and Dayu Tsau.  Dayu was having so fun much that he decided to jump into the 9-10 free. It was hard to stop the speedy Greg Newbold who proved why English Rugby players are tougher than those padded American football
players. Dayu is now with Chris on Craig's List looking for a dry wallet, keys and cell phone.  Linguists hope that his dictionary is dry so he can practice spelling Tallyho.

June 26, 2010 A Meet Tallyho at TanterraDSCN0824 Twins.JPG

The Foxes tried to double their fun by cloning each Fox in the second (what else?) annual Twin Day.  The 15-18s were thrilled to make twice as many posters, this week honoring the cloned 11-12s.  The Foxes got on a roll by winning the first event.  Outside smoke Chris Cochran dropped 2 seconds to win the IM.  In fact, the Foxes won the first five individual events and ten out of the first eleven events of the meet.  The Foxes continued their cleanliness kick by sweeping up the Tarpon Ocean (maybe we should send them to help with the oil spill in the Gulf).  Twins Phoebe Bacon and Mei Mei Zuo, Kyle Barclay and Lawrence Redmond, Rachel Caplan and Lisa Deng combined to sweep all the events in their age groups.  Impressively, triplets Avikar Periwal, Brian Tsau, and Alex Zhang each won an event.  Although Tanterra found a big tarpon almost as fast as Chris Verboncoeur in the free, Chris fought him off to sweep his events once again.  Fox triplets took out the broom for eight sweeps during the meet.  Without vuvuzelas or bagpipes, the Foxes still managed to make a lot of noise with a cow bell.  On the last relay, Mei Mei Zuo (with Brooke Barclay, Radhika Mukerji and Evi Liu) reeled in a Tarpon so that our Girls Twin Relays could go 1-2.  As soon as Mei Mei touched, the Foxes dashed to Cal Tort to outtouch the Hallowell Hurricanes for our last sweep of the morning.

 June21, 2010 B Meet Tallyho at Montgomery SquareDSC_5673 Neon Hat.JPG

On Wednesday, the Foxes were lights out at Montgomery Square. Even in the darkness, however, Sydney Feyerick and many other neon Foxes were visible.  In "light" of the Foxes' lack of fashion sense, it was ok that you couldn't see them.  Even if you couldn't see the Foxes, you certainly could hear them (no guard super hearing powers needed) - thanks to the Twomey Vuvuzelas.  All the parents must love Mrs. Twomey.

The parents did love all the cleaning the Foxes did.  The Foxes left the Seahawk Nest virtually spotless.  The Foxes swept their first 4 events on their way to 17 sweeps.  The Foxes won all twelve 12 & under free events and swept most. For example, future big kids Josh Pilarski, Finn Bacon, Dan Wei Zuo and Scott Post dropped a combined 30 seconds in the free to go 1-4 in the 6&under free.  Josh dropped 12 seconds to win. You would think that Josh would have been happy with that. But no, he had to go on and drop another 39 seconds in the back. Finn Bacon, Maggie Hillman, Augusto Iglesias, Nick Sieg, Stefan Tesliuc also dropped more than 10 seconds in events. Reid Bacon, Chris Cochran, Lexi Cochran, Octavio Iglesias, Molly Kiniry, Michael Palmer, Josh Pilarski, Niko Papageorge, Alex Sklar, Alex Smelson, Stefan Tesliuc, Becky Wolfson, and Mei Mei Zuo got all best times. All these best times translated into winning 44 races.DSCN0784 Neon Clash.JPG

Reid Bacon, Chris Cochran, Radhika Mukerji, Amelia Oliver, Olivia Palmer, Lia Papageorge, Ian (Stealth) Rosenthal, Molly Silverberg, and Becky Wolfson were all double event winners.  The Foxes were especially excited with these wins because many got double ribbons -- obviously getting ready for Twin Day. With great swimming, Caroline Beuavais, Brett Feyerick, Augusto Iglesias, Octavio Iglesias, Lia Papageorge, Josefina Scriven, Nick Shawley and Juliet Twomey all won trips to Olney. Thanks to wonderful weather, the meet didn't last as long as the 2008 MS Marathon or the Isner-Mahoot tennis match.

June 19, 2010 A Meet Tallyho v Woodcliffe

As promised, Woodcliffe proved to be exceptionally fast.  It took an incredible effort by the Foxes to pull out a victory.   Almost everyone got all best times and as a result swimmers moved up their seeds to get extra points.  For example, we won one event in which we supposed to get swept. For some reason Chris Verboncoeur never moved up his seed).   I do want to thank Kerry, Samantha and our Navy Seals for making personal sacrifices to be at the meet.   I am so proud of the way everyone raced.  It was great.Thumbs Up for Tallyho.JPG

And of course we broke a great number of records.  Lisa Deng broke a 30 year old team record in the  13-14 breast.  7-year-old Phoebe Bacon broke the 8&under team record in the fly.  And a much older Chris Verboncoeur broke his own pool record in the fly as well as Justin Ward's pool record in the IM.  Our girls free relay also broke the team record (Anya Vinogradsky, Connie Xu, Rachel Caplan and Phoebe Bacon).  Check the Tallyho Times for more information.

I am constantly amazed by the generosity of our parents.  From setting up Team Unify all winter, to the Spaghetti Dinners, Concessions at the meets, organizing our Bowling Trip,  working at the meets and please never forget the unseen computer operations and more and more.  I can't believe how much time the parents put into this team.  Why do you do it?  But I know it helps make it a wonderful experience for the athletes and it is critical to the recent growth and development of our swim team.  Swimmers join and stick with swimming because our parents put on a great show.

June 12, 2010 Time Trials:  That was perhaps the best Times Trial the Foxes have ever had.  There wasa huge number of swimmers.  The more Foxes, the more fun we all will have.   Our youngest Foxes did a great job of handling all the newness, uncertainties and confusion.  They looked like pros.  The returning Foxes looked fast.  Many clearly swam in the winter and the hard work paiRibbons.JPGd off.  Thanks to all the parents who worked the meet to make is quick and efficient.

The fun is just beginning.   We have a very busy week coming up with morning practices, our first B Meet, a bowling outing, the first spaghetti dinner, the 7th Annual Tallyho Free-Throw Contest, and the first A Meet.
