Piranhas Defeat Pirates

 
Week #2 in the NVSL’s division 6 brought a very strong Pinecrest Piranha team to the Poplar Tree Pirate Pool in Chantilly, VA.  The morning started on a patriotic note, with the Pirates parading in wearing red, white and blue, celebrating our nation’s Independence Day weekend. While the Pirates battled valiantly throughout the meet breaking 5 team records, the Piranhas won the first 6 events and went on to capture the meet with a final score of 252 to 150. 
 
Evan Baker brought home the first Pirate victory of the day in the boys 13-14 freestyle, breaking his own team record with a time of 26.81.  Evan’s sister Nicole Baker, continued the Pirate momentum with a first place finish in the 13-14 girls.  Brianna Fridy completed the Pirate freestyle wins with her victory in the girls 15-18 age group.  Haley Alderman, 9-10 girls, and Frankie Marrero and David Stewart with an identical time in the 15-18 boys all had 2nd place finishes, capturing valuable points for the Pirate team. 
 
The Pirates gained momentum in the backstroke events, with Julia Young and Haley Alderman combining to go 1-2 in the 9-10 girls and Jonathan Wen, capturing first place in the 13-14 boys, as a 12 year old and breaking a 9 year old team record with a time of 33.49.  2nd place finishes by Mathew Rickard (8 & under boys), Nick David (9-10 boys), Fletcher Madsen (11-12 boys), Lauren Hensley (13-14 girls), Frankie Marrero (15-18 boys) helped boost the Pirates score. 
 
The Pirates also swam well in the breastroke events.  Mary Kominski won a close race in the 9-10 girls.  Nicole Baker won her second race of the day in the 13-14 girls and David Stewart, 15-18 boys, rounded out the Pirate victories.  Olivia Edmondson, 8 & under girls, Jonathan Wen, 11-12 boys (a new team record!), Julia Brunner, 11-12 girls and Katie Dingman, 15-18 girls all had 2nd place finishes. 
 
In the butterfly events, Lauren Young and Mary Kominski went 1-2 in 9-10 girls and Evan Baker was a winner in the boys 13-14 with a time of 30.06, breaking his second team record of the day and his 6th of the week!  Lauren Hensley 13-14 girls and Brianna Friday 15-18 girls also secured victories for the Pirates, with Nick David swimming to 2nd place in the 9-10 boys.   
 
The Pirates were competitive in the relays, winning 6 of the 12 races.  Julia Young, Mary Kominski, Lauren Young and Haley Alderman set their second Pirate team record of the season in the 9-10 girls 100 meter medley with a time of 1:11.94.   The 8 & under boys relay of Kai Taft, Matthew Rickard, Nicholas Martin and Daniel Williams, 13-14 boys Jonathan Wen, Michael Amico, Even Baker and Steven Longino, 13-14 girls Hannah Warnick, Nicole Baker, Lauren Hensley, Maddie Williams, 15-18 girls Susan Andrejcak, Katie Dingman, Brianna Fridy, Virginia Walsh, and Boys Mixed Age Steven Longino, Nick David, Evan Baker and David Stewart completed the Pirate relay victories. 
 
Double individual event winners for the Pirates included Nicole Baker (13-14 free and breast), Evan Baker (13-14 free and fly) and Brianna Fridy (15-18 girls free and fly). 
Single individual event winners for Poplar Tree were, Julia Young (9-10 backstroke), Jonathan Wen (13-14 backstroke), Mary Kominski (9-10 breastroke), David Stewart (15-18 breastroke), Lauren Young (9-10 fly)and Lauren Hensley (13-14 fly). 
 
The Pirates look forward to hosting the neighboring Greenbriar Dolphins on Saturday July 9th. 
 
Poplar Tree at Virginia Run
 
Pirates Defeat Riptide – June 25, 2011 – On a beautiful opening day of the 2011 Northern Virginia Swimming League (NVSL) season, the Poplar Tree Pirates captured their first victory by defeating the Centreville team, the Virginia Run Riptide. The final score of 212-190 came down to the final relays of the meet. The Pirates broke three individual records and one team record. The Pirates start off in the very competitive Division 6 with a record of 1-0 and their dual meet consecutive win streak over three summers is now at ten victories in a row.
