Week 3 – Prince George’s Council - AT HOME: WIN
Week 4 – Kings Landing
Week 5 – Indian Head
Our History
The Severn Crossing Stingrays swim team, 2009 Division F Champions, is located in Bowie, Maryland. Sponsored by its homeowners association, Severn Crossing Swim Team (SXST) was created for the children of Severn Crossing families. The team is approximately a quarter of the size of other Bowie and PMSL teams which have open membership like BBT, BSR, Whitehall, Pointer Ridge etc.
The team started in 1992 and was part of the Laurel Swim League that included current Prince-Mont Swim League (PMSL) teams Laurel City and West Arundel. The team won no swim meets its first two years, as most of the swimmers had no experience and all age groups were learning about competitive swimming for the first time.
SXST joined PMSL in 1997 and has since won three Divisional titles and has competed as high as the E-Division and as low as the G-Division. This year, SXST is in the E-Division of PMSL.
Our Coaches -
Currently, lead by Head Coach Albert Stokes, many former swimmers who once “ruled the pool” have gone on to become the team’s head coach and/or assistant coaches like now Assistant Coach, Allison Dean, who is currently swimming her 10th and final season for the team as she “ages” out. Allison has followed in the footsteps of alumni coaches Jordan & Sarah Pesses, Kelly Garvis, Manuel Nuñez and Kevin Brown.
Our Swimmers –
Several Severn Crossing residents who began competitive swimming at SXST have gone on to swim for their NCAA Division I and II college teams: University of Maryland; Millersville University of Pennsylvania; and McDaniel College.
Our Families –
Neighborhood membership has created a very close-knit community and has enabled many Severn Crossing families to develop long-lasting friendships and memberships. In fact, our Garvis and Lorditch families have proudly fueled the team with great swimmers each year since the team formed 18 years ago! The Lorditch family has ten more years to go as their youngest swimmer Johnny is 8!
Severn Crossing families frequently have multiple children on the team, so it very common not to hear the individual names of swimmers rather, you hear the names of families such as the Skinner’s, the Rozanski’s, the Demetry’s, the Garvis’, the Stephens’, the Lorditch’s, the Baker’s, the Barzanti’s, the Leahy’s, the Bond’s, the Edwards’, the Salmon’s, the Helgeson’s, the Holmes’, the Langley’s, the Rakshys’, the Pankey’s, the Lynch’s, the Wheeler’s etc. etc. etc.
Although community membership and close knit families are SXST’s most prideful elements, these are also SXST’s most impactful weaknesses; when families vacation, the drastic reduction of swimmers on meet rosters has proven to be a detriment to the outcome of swim meets, especially when families vacation together, which is very common at Severn Crossing.
SXST’s future remains bright as the team prepares to defend its championship title at next week’s Divisional championship meet at Temple Hills where six team of the E-Division will engage in a tough battle.
