WAVES CAP COUNTY TITLE WITH DIVISION CHAMPIONSHIP!
The heart of a champion lies in Waldorf, Maryland and it belongs to every member of the 2011 Waves of Westlake. On a sweltering day at Whitehall Pool and Tennis Club, the Waves put aside thoughts of their only season loss just 7 days before and captured the Division B title by rallying past Whitehall for the win. Because of the regular season loss to Whitehall, the only way the Waves would win the banner would be to finish first in the divisional championship meet, and that’s just what they did! The final score of the meet proved how competitive this division truly is:
Westlake 239
Whitehall 214
Greenbelt 202
Belair S&R 195
Adelphi 192
West Laurel 142
It wasn’t an easy victory by any stretch, as the Waves were able to finish first in 12 events. The 49 event winners overall were distributed very evenly among the six teams. The Waves jumped out early by winning the first three individual events then had to wait until event 25 to capture their next. But the Waves rally was huge, winning 8 of the final 24.
Triple winners for the champs were Anthony and Andrew Nguyen with single event winners Emily Decker, Alex Nguyen, Kerrigan McMillen, Carla Arquero and Denny Nguyen.
Congratulations to Anthony Nguyen for breaking a 36 year old PMSL record in the 10&under boys 25m butterfly! He went on to set a new WOW team record in the boys 9-10 25m breast stroke. Then brother Andrew set a new Whitehall pool and WOW record in the 11-12 boys 50m breast stroke and a WOW record in the boys 100m IM. Denny Nguyen set a WOW record in the boys 15-18 100m IM, then just for good measure it was “Relay Nguyen” (Anthony, Andrew, Alex and Denny) setting a Whitehall pool record and WOW team record in the boys 9-18 200m free relay. What a great performance by all!
Whitehall’s pool has seen some amazing performances in their long history, so to capture those records is some accomplishment!
Now the very best move on to All-Stars!
What a great season it’s been! Just eight short weeks ago the Waves took to the water as a much smaller but talented team with high expectations. But few could predict the success this year after a tough 0-5 finish in Division A and the loss of some key swimmers. The future remains bright, but we will need your help to stay on top. We have watched the Waves slowly age and we’re missing 10 and unders. During the offseason get out there and recruit those young ones! Remember, all they need to do is get across the pool...our great coaching staff will do the rest. Some of our very best swimmers through history barely could make that first 25 meter try and were bringing home first place finishes just a couple of years later. Winning is great but being part of the Waves tradition is really what counts. Thanks to all of our kids, every one of you! Those smiles on your faces keep us young and remind us every day why we volunteer to be a part of it all. Have a great Summer and a wonderful Fall and Winter!
