2010 Highlights
For Meadowbrook Woods, 2010 may become known as "The Summer of the 14U's" as they swam out of the shadow of some former greats and cast their imprints on the team record books. The fireworks began - right off the get go - on June 19th at Wellington in which Kevin Olsen lowered the backstroke 50m club record that had stood for six years with a time of 33.77s. In the early going on June 26 at Bridlewood, Olsen, Sean Rouffa, Michael Weiser and Tanner Curry swam away with the 200m Medley Relay record (2:19.85) and later in the morning lowered the 200m Freestyle Relay record (2:00.19). One week later at Brookside, Olsen, Rouffa, Curry and Nicholas Vaccaro lowered the Medley Record again (2:18.92). Without a doubt, Vaccaro was one of the most improved swimmers of the summer and peaked at Divisionals where he won the 50m Freestyle (29.14s) and lead the Freestyle and Medley teams to 1st place finishes.
On July 10th, swimming at home - in the rain - against some longtime rivals from Ashland, Lauren Sargent (39.90s) lowered her seed time by more than a second and smashed the 50m Breaststroke record that had stood for more than a decade and was set way back on June 24, 2000 by Kelly Goggins at FAST (40.06s). Sargent also had four triple-event wins for the Makos and was the club's overall high point swimmer.
But it is has been far from a "one group show" this summer at MBW. At Bridlewood, Matthew Healey crushed the club 12U 50m Butterfly club record with a time of 35.05s that is nearly a second faster than the previous record set by Corbin Foucart back on July 30, 2005. He went on to set a new 50m Backstroke record vs. Veterans Park (36.20s) and lowered the Butterfly record again at Divisionals with a time of 34.66s. Healey teamed up with Hunter Herbert, Daniel Smith and Brock Cudahy at Divisionals to set a new club record in the 100m Freestyle Relay with a time of 1:01.32.
Swimming in her rookie season for the Makos, Aidan-Claire Cudahy had four triple-event-wins for the 8U Makos. 10U swimmer Max Derderian had a "break-out" summer and is literally seconds faster than last year. At Divisionals, Derderian joined Clayton Bellamy, Ronald Peterson and Jimmy Baumstark to lower the 100m Freestyle Relay record at Divisionals (1:07.32).
Possibly the biggest story of the 8-week "outdoor fiesta" was eighteen-year-old Rachel Lund who recently graduated from Osbourn Park High School in Manassas where she was named Female Scholar Athlete of the Year and earned "Most Valuable Player" award for the Yellow Jackets' swim team. After swimming 12-seasons for the Makos and setting several team records, Lund saved her best effort for last. At Divisionals, she lowered her own team record in the 50m Butterfly (33.04s) and broke a 10-year old record in the 50m Breaststroke with a blistering time of 39.64s. Tess Jarrett, Rachel Severson and Eric Sargent coached the squad this summer.

Shown here just prior to the 150m crescendo event at the Firecracker Relays held at Bridlewood on July 5, Sean Rouffa, Max Derderian, Matthew Healey, Kevin Olsen and Trevor Heckman may be considered the "Fab Five" for the Makos this summer. The girls side was represented by Aidan-Claire Cudahy, Elizabeth Healey, Riley Curry, Lauren Sargent, and Rachel Lund. Both groups placed 6th in the fundraising event that featured the top nine clubs from the 24-teams in Prince William County.
